Job Introduction

Bradford Finance Team - Insurance

Bradford Finance have undergone significant change and investment. Having been under resourced for a number of years it is now entering a new phase of development and strategic focus in order to support the Council’s ambitious new corporate strategy and plans.

A restructure has recently completed within the department, which includes significant additional capacity and investment in training and development.

About The Role

The Insurance Officer role is at the heart of the Insurance function within the Finance team and essential to the delivery of the Council’s plans and future financial sustainability.

The successful candidate will work closely with insurers and external lawyers, as well as departments and service areas to provide a best-in-class insurance service.

You will work with our Insurance Manager and Insurance Officers to implement the future development of the service, thus enabling the council to meet its future challenges whilst fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide support for the Insurance Manager and professional leadership in respect of the Council’s insurance arrangements and the management of the Council’s Insurance Section, focusing on areas of higher risk including liability claims.
  • Support on the procurement of the Council’s insurance programme, ensuring compliance with the Insurance Act 2015.
  • Collaborate with service areas in relation to claims and contribute to the development of loss control strategies to improve the Council’s insurance risk profile and improvement of the risk management arrangements.
  • Lead the Council’s insurance claims handling arrangements to ensure they are handled in a professional and timely manner including liaison with claims handlers, legal representatives, loss adjusters and departmental contacts in the gathering of evidential support for claims.
  • To inform the Insurance Manager and Head of Corporate and Strategic Finance on all substantive risks relating to insurance and claims matters.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to internal and external customers.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Insurance Officer / Claims Handler, with a strong track record of defending claims.

You Will Bring

  • Practical experience of insurance issues relating to local Government or a large organisation.
  • Management and administration of insurance claims.
  • Some technical competence in insurance policy clauses and wordings.
  • Working knowledge of risk management principles and techniques.
  • Ability to use spreadsheet and word processing packages.
  • Ability to use a range of financial systems and applications.
  • Experience of effective corporate and collaborative working, building relationships to deliver corporate and service priorities.
  • Experience of applying high level understanding when exercising judgement in challenging and sensitive circumstances, providing advice at a senior level to managers to achieve corporate objectives in regard to insurance matters.

Essential Qualifications

  • CII qualified at Diploma level or studying towards similar insurance, legal or risk qualifications OR qualified with a Law degree OR qualified by experience.
