Job Description
Applications are invited for the post of Internet Intelligence Investigator (III) within Force Intelligence currently based at Headquarters. Provide tactical advice and guidance to investigators, intelligence staff, and operational teams regarding the effective use of open-source opportunities. Ensure as a practitioner that you operate in accordance with relevant legislation, policies, procedures, and professional standards, maintaining appropriate governance and oversight.
Maintain an up-to-date understanding of open-source methodologies, internet-based technologies, social media platforms, and emerging digital trends to support the development of team capability and operational effectiveness. Complete intelligence-led online research, monitoring, and evidential capture, ensuring activity is proportionate, lawful, and meets investigative requirements and working strategy.
Identify potential opportunities to improve capability through innovation, continuous improvement, and the adoption of emerging techniques and best practice. To support the delivery of appropriate training, mentoring, and professional development. Promote the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and information security when managing sensitive intelligence and operational activity. Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role and rank. Support investigations by providing evidence in court as and when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist advice, guidance, and support to investigators, Senior Investigating Officers (SIOs), intelligence teams, and operational colleagues.
- Conduct covert, proactive intelligence, and evidence-gathering activity, including directed surveillance where appropriate, in accordance with the CPIA, RIPA, and all other relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Identify, develop, and exploit online intelligence opportunities to support new and existing investigations and operational activity.
- Present intelligence and evidential material in a clear, concise, and actionable format, tailored to the SIO’s requirements and compliant with relevant policies, procedures, and evidential standards.
- Work collaboratively with internal departments and operational teams to support intelligence development, investigative progression, and evidential capture.
- Maintain a high level of knowledge and awareness of internet-based technologies, social media platforms, mobile applications, online behaviors, and emerging trends, particularly those relevant to covert online activity.
- Provide specialist advice and practical support to colleagues undertaking online investigations, ensuring activity is conducted lawfully, proportionately, and in accordance with relevant guidance and legislation.
- Maintain your continuous professional development programme to ensure you retain the knowledge, skills, and competence required to operate effectively online.
- Maintain accurate records and demonstrate a high level of integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and accountability when handling sensitive intelligence and evidential material.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role as required.

Essential
- Competent in the use of computers and digital systems to conduct research, including experience with Windows-based software, databases, and other formalised records management systems.
- Proven experience in conducting focused open-source enquiries and online research, particularly across social media platforms, telecommunications applications, and other digital sources.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and the ability to manage, prioritize, and organise allocated duties effectively.
- Good working knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, regulations, and guidance, including the Data Protection Act, Computer Misuse Act, European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA), and Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act (CPIA).
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and relevant stakeholders.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly, accurately, and concisely.
- Demonstrable technical knowledge, experience, and training in online research, digital technologies, and open-source intelligence.
- Knowledge and understanding of current police systems and their application in the gathering, recording, and assessment of intelligence.
Desirable
- Completion of, and willingness to undertake and successfully complete, formalised Open-Source Intelligence training and/or other relevant qualifications.
- Knowledge and understanding of current police intelligence systems and their use in the development and management of intelligence.
- Experience of producing accurate and concise evidential reports suitable for submission within the Criminal Justice System.
- Knowledge, experience, and understanding of covert policing methodologies, techniques, and practices.
- Experience of working on or contributing to major and complex investigations.
Important Information
- Salary: Grade 6, £38,169
- Hours: Working hours will consist of seven days and will consist of Monday to Friday 0700-1500 and 1000-1800 and occasional weekend working 0700-1500. Working outside of these hours may be required. There is a requirement to always work flexibly with due regard to prevailing workloads and priorities.
