Job Description

Interaction Designer - Government Gateway

Location: Birmingham (Hybrid)
Day Rate: £435 per day (Inside IR35)
Contract Length: 6 Months (Standard initial term)
Department: UK Public Sector

We are seeking an experienced Interaction Designer to support a critical Government Gateway programme. In this role, you will embed across key feature streams to deliver secure, inclusive, and seamless public services.

Key Responsibilities

  • User-Centred Design: Map end-to-end service flows and interactions based on robust user research, data analytics, and government outcomes.
  • Prototyping and Testing: Build, iterate, and refine high- and low-fidelity prototypes, wireframes, and user journeys using the GOV.UK Design System.
  • Accessibility and Inclusion: Ensure all designs comply with WCAG 2.2 AAA/AA standards, creating accessible services that work for users regardless of digital capability.
  • Agile Collaboration: Work within multidisciplinary teams (User Researchers, Content Designers, Developers, and Product Managers) to champion design choices to non-technical stakeholders.

Essential Skills And Experience

  • Proven track record as an Interaction Designer within digital public services, ideally aligning with the GDS (Government Digital Service) Standard.
  • Expertise in evidence-based design translating complex user research and operational data into clear design hypotheses.
  • Rapid, iterative prototyping experience in an Agile environment.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with an ability to communicate the business value of good design clearly.
