On behalf of The Ministry of Justice, we are looking for an Interaction Designer (Inside IR35) for a 6-month contract based Hybrid in any UK MoJ Office.
The Role:
The Interaction Designer will join the Website Builder team, which supports teams across the Ministry of Justice and its arm’s-length bodies to create accessible, usable and visually effective websites on the MOJ Website Builder platform. These websites are independent of GOV.UK and often act as public-facing shop windows for organisations, services and campaigns, so strong web design skills are essential.
The platform is built on WordPress and helps editors create websites that follow government accessibility, usability and service design principles, while allowing enough flexibility for each organisation’s brand and visual identity to come through. The team works across live service support for existing sites using the current Hale theme, as well as the next iteration of the platform, known as GovWind / Full Site Editor. This work is focused on improving the editor experience through reusable patterns, templates, stronger design foundations and clearer guardrails.
The designer will work closely with product, delivery, user research, content design, developers and accessibility specialists to design and improve website layouts, page templates, reusable patterns and platform components that help editors build high-quality websites without needing specialist design or WordPress expertise.
As an Interaction Designer, your main responsibilities will be to:
- Design and improve public-facing website layouts and user journeys.
- Create page templates, reusable patterns and platform components.
- Improve the experience for website editors using the MOJ Website Builder platform.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including Product Managers, User Researchers, Content Designers, Developers and Accessibility Specialists.
- Translate user research and content requirements into practical design solutions.
- Produce prototypes and iterate designs based on testing and feedback.
- Support both live service improvements and future platform development.

Essential:
- Strong web design experience, including designing public-facing, content-heavy or campaign/recruitment-style websites.
- Experience designing for content management systems such as WordPress.
- Experience designing accessible, responsive and usable websites that work across different devices and user needs.
- Ability to create clear user journeys, page structures, navigation and task flows.
- Ability to balance visual design, usability and accessibility, particularly where websites need to feel distinct from GOV.UK.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong Figma skills, including maintaining design files, documenting design decisions and creating reusable design assets.
- Ability to translate user research and content needs into practical design improvements for both website editors and end users.
- Experience creating prototypes and iterating designs through testing and feedback.
- Comfortable working across live services, future-facing platform development and design debt.
