Rate: £500 - £650 p/d Umbrella (Inside IR35)
We are supporting a London local authority with the appointment of an experienced Interim Audit Manager to lead its internal audit service during an important period of delivery and development.
About the Role
This is a hands-on leadership role with responsibility for managing the delivery of the Council’s 2026/27 Internal Audit Plan, developing the existing team and providing senior-level advice on internal control, governance, and risk.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading and managing the Council’s internal audit resources and day-to-day audit activity
- Ensuring the 2026/27 Internal Audit Plan is delivered efficiently and within agreed deadlines
- Managing, coaching and developing a team of Principal Auditors and Auditors
- Quality reviewing audit reports, working papers and recommendations
- Contract managing audits delivered by outsourced audit providers
- Undertaking complex, sensitive and strategically important audit and risk assignments
- Advising senior managers and stakeholders on control weaknesses, governance issues and practical improvements
- Supporting the Head of Assurance with the annual audit opinion and Annual Governance Statement
- Reviewing the Internal Audit Service against the Global Internal Audit Standards and implementing required improvements
- Presenting audit findings and assurance information to senior management, committees and elected Members
- Deputising for the Head of Assurance on audit matters when required

Requirements
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Significant internal audit experience within the public sector
- Strong experience within local government or a similarly complex public service environment
- Proven experience managing, supervising and developing internal audit professionals
- A strong understanding of local authority governance, risk management and internal control
- Experience delivering risk-based internal audit plans to demanding deadlines
- The ability to undertake and oversee complex, sensitive and high-profile audit reviews
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills
- The confidence to challenge constructively and work effectively with senior officers and Members
- Knowledge of modern internal audit methodologies, professional standards and relevant legislation
- The ability to quickly assess priorities and make effective use of both internal and outsourced resources

A relevant professional qualification such as IIA, CIPFA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent CCAB qualification is required.
Suitable Candidates
This assignment would suit an established Audit Manager, Senior Audit Manager or experienced Principal Auditor who is ready to take full operational responsibility for a local authority internal audit service.
