Interim Chief Medical Officer (CMO)

12-Month FTC (potential temp to perm) | NHS | VSM

We are partnering with an NHS provider to recruit an experienced Interim Chief Medical Officer to join the executive team.

This is an opportunity for a highly credible and experienced Board-level medical leader to provide strategic clinical leadership across quality, patient safety, governance, medical workforce, and improvement.

The successful candidate will work closely with executive and clinical colleagues to support organizational priorities, strengthen clinical leadership, and help deliver high-quality services for patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide executive-level clinical leadership across the organization.
  • Lead on quality, patient safety, and clinical governance.
  • Support medical workforce strategy and leadership development.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical and operational leaders to drive continuous improvement.
  • Champion research, innovation, and evidence-based practice.
  • Contribute to organizational strategy and Board-level decision making.
  • Coach and develop senior clinical leaders across the organization.

About You

Applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Previous experience as a Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director, Executive Medical Director, or equivalent.
  • Be a currently practicing clinician.
  • A successful track record of senior medical leadership within a large NHS organization.
  • Significant experience of leading quality and governance agendas.
  • Experienced in operating at board or executive level within an NHS provider organization.
  • Experience managing complex organizational challenges and change programmes.

Essential Qualifications

Candidates should possess:

  • Current GMC/ GDC registration and inclusion on the GMC Specialist register.
  • Sustained record of continued professional development.
  • MBA or other postgraduate management qualification in a relevant field or substantial experience.
  • Substantive experience as a Consultant within the NHS.

Package

  • VSM appointment.
  • Opportunity to maintain some clinical practice if desired.
  • 6 to 12 month ftc and potential for the role to extend, or go temp to perm.
  • Predominantly based on site.
