Role Overview
Our client, a leading investment firm, holds two fully operational and profitable renewable energy assets based in the UK. The client is now bringing the full operational and financial management in-house.
While the assets are revenue generating and profitable, the finance functions for each asset currently do not exist. We are seeking a hands-on Interim Finance Director to build the entire finance operational framework from scratch.
You will be stepping into an empty room from a finance perspective. You will be creating the chart of accounts, designing control environments, and setting up cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and board-level reporting, primarily using Excel.
Key Responsibilities
- Build the Finance Function from Scratch: Design and implement all core financial architecture, including the Chart of Accounts, management reporting suite, internal controls, and operational finance processes.
- Financial Planning & Analysis: Establish dynamic Excel-based financial models, budgeting frameworks, rolling cash flow forecasts, and long-term business planning.
- Board & Investor Reporting: Deliver clear, institutional-grade board packs and investor reports directly to the PE backing team.
- Process & Integration Oversight: Interface with existing operational tech stacks (procurement and maintenance systems) and oversee the outsourced AP/AR functions.
- Commercial Support: Work alongside operational heads to ensure smooth transition from the former operating partner and drive margin optimization.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
This role requires a rare hybrid: an executive who possesses the commercial weight to communicate with private equity investors, but who still retains the willingness to get into the weeds and build a spreadsheet model from the ground up.
Essential Requirements
- Asset-Heavy Sector Experience: Background in renewables, oil & gas, energy, manufacturing, or infrastructure. (Candidates with purely SaaS or tech experience will not be considered).
- Build-from-Scratch Track Record: Proven experience building or rebuilding finance functions in start-up, carve-out, or turnaround environments.
- Private Equity Exposure: Prior experience working within PE-backed businesses or answering directly to institutional investment boards.
- Hands-on Execution: You must be comfortable building a Chart of Accounts and financial models in Excel yourself, not delegating to a team.
- Level: An established Interim FD who thrives on execution. (Purely strategic CFOs who no longer do hands-on operational finance will not be a fit).
