Interim Finance Director / Senior Finance Business Partner (Commercial)
London with some travel to projects (hybrid)
Contract / Interim – 6 months initially
Construction - Sector experience is mandatory
Reporting to the CFO and MD
The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Finance Director to join a leading PE backed project-based construction business operating across complex private sector programmes.
Working as a key member of the senior leadership team, you will partner closely with the Business Unit Managing Director to drive commercial performance, provide strategic financial insight, and support the delivery of business objectives. This is a highly visible leadership role, combining financial stewardship, commercial decision support, governance, and operational performance management.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping business strategy, enhancing financial performance, and ensuring robust financial control across a diverse portfolio of projects.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Finance & Business Partnering
- Partner with senior leadership to provide financial insight, challenge, and analysis to support decision-making.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of business plans and strategic objectives.
- Evaluate commercial opportunities, bids, contracts, and investment decisions.

Financial Planning & Reporting
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and business planning processes.
- Deliver accurate, timely, and insightful financial reporting.
- Monitor financial performance, KPIs, and key business metrics.
- Manage financial plans and forecasts to support sustainable growth.
Commercial & Operational Performance
- Provide financial oversight across a portfolio of projects.
- Support project performance, cost control initiatives, and working capital management.
- Identify financial risks and opportunities, ensuring appropriate mitigation plans are implemented.
- Assist in resolving commercial and financial issues where required.
Governance & Controls
- Maintain strong financial governance and internal controls.
- Ensure compliance with contractual, audit, and reporting obligations.
- Lead engagement with external auditors across the project portfolio.
- Support finance transformation and continuous improvement initiatives.

Candidate Profile
Experience
- Experience within construction, specifically working with project cost (Essential)
- Significant experience in finance leadership, commercial finance, or finance business partnering roles. (Essential)
- Proven track record of supporting operational businesses at senior leadership level.
- Strong experience in financial planning, performance management, and reporting.

- Strong commercial acumen with excellent financial modelling and analytical capabilities.
- Ability to translate complex financial information into clear business insights.
- Confident stakeholder manager with the ability to influence at executive level.
- Pragmatic, solutions-focused, and delivery-oriented.
- High levels of integrity, accountability, and professional credibility.
- Collaborative leadership style with experience operating in matrix organisations.
Qualifications
- ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
