Interim Head of Legal (Contracts, Planning & Property) – Midlands – Initial 3-6 Months+ – Up to £650 Umbrella

Venn Group’s specialist legal team are currently working with a Midlands based Council to recruit an Interim Head of Legal to head up their Commercial Team. The successful candidate will require a background managing legal teams in a Local Government setting. It would be preferred to have a background in either Commercial Contracts, Property or Planning. This is an excellent opportunity to take on a senior strategic interim role within a forward-thinking Local Authority, combining high-level legal advice, operational leadership and service management.

The Role

  • Working Arrangement: Full Time, ideally hybrid working however remote working would be considered
  • Duration: Initial 3-6 months with likely extension thereafter
  • Rate: Up to £650 per day Umbrella

Role Responsibilities

  • Supporting the Head of Service in the strategic management and operational delivery of the legal service
  • Providing expert legal advice to Members, Directors, senior Officers and corporate stakeholders on complex commercial and governance matters
  • Advising on procurement, commercial agreements, regeneration projects, partnerships and wider contractual arrangements
  • Ensuring the effective allocation of work, maintaining service standards and driving continuous improvement across both teams
  • Contributing to the development of legal strategy, policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and Local Government governance requirements
  • Supporting corporate objectives through effective risk management, decision-making and the delivery of high-quality legal services

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive (or equivalent) with substantial post-qualification experience in Commercial law
  • Significant management and strategic leadership experience within a Local Authority legal service is essential
  • Proven experience managing legal teams, including responsibility for performance, development and operational delivery
  • Ability to oversee a Property legal function, with an understanding of Local Government property work
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with experience advising senior Officers, Members and corporate leadership teams
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment whilst managing competing priorities
