HW Interim are partnering with an organisation to appoint an Interim IT Director for a hands-on leadership assignment with significant scope and visibility.

This is not a strategy-setting role. The technology roadmap is already defined. The successful individual will take ownership of execution, bringing pace, commercial focus, and strong leadership to a business that needs to move quickly from plans to measurable outcomes.

We are particularly interested in high-potential IT leaders who have already demonstrated their ability to lead at this level and are now ready to take on broader responsibility, greater organizational exposure, and a more substantial transformation mandate.

This could suit an IT leader who is on a strong upward trajectory, has the ambition to progress towards a future CIO/CTO position, and is looking for an assignment where they can make a tangible impact.

Deliverables include:

  • Reduce IT operating costs while maintaining or improving service levels.
  • Review and optimize the managed service provider model, improving performance, accountability, and value.
  • Lead the replacement of a legacy ERP platform, ensuring the business selects and implements the right solution for its future needs.
  • Assess the technology estate and strengthen infrastructure, cyber security, and operational resilience.
  • Improve IT governance, accountability, and business partnering across the organization.
  • Build and develop a high-performing IT function that delivers reliable operational support while enabling future business growth.
  • Establish clear priorities, create momentum, and ensure delivery remains focused on measurable business outcomes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

We are looking for an ambitious, delivery-focused IT leader who combines hands-on operational capability with the confidence to operate at executive level.

You will ideally have:

  • Proven IT leadership experience, ideally at IT Director, Head of IT, or equivalent level within an SME or mid-market organization.
  • Evidence that you are ready for your next significant leadership challenge, with the ambition and capability to progress towards broader technology leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience taking ownership of IT transformation and operational improvement, including infrastructure modernisation, ERP change, supplier management, and service optimisation.
  • A hands-on leadership style: comfortable setting direction, making decisions, and then getting close enough to delivery to ensure things actually happen.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to balance cost, risk, resilience, and business enablement.
  • Demonstrable experience managing third-party suppliers and improving performance and value from outsourced technology services.
  • The credibility to work effectively from technical teams through to the executive leadership team, adapting communication and challenge to the audience.
  • A track record of building trusted relationships across business functions and positioning IT as a proactive business partner rather than simply a support function.
  • The ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment, demonstrating adaptability, ownership, sound judgement, and pace.
  • Ideally, previous experience delivering a similar transformation or IT leadership mandate, with the ability to apply that experience quickly in a new environment.
