About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Interim MLRO to join a regulated payments institution on an initial three-month assignment. The successful candidate will step into the role on a temporary basis, providing immediate MLRO coverage, regulatory oversight and hands-on leadership across AML/CFT and financial crime activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the Interim MLRO, providing day-to-day oversight of AML/CFT and financial crime activities.
  • Provide immediate support and leadership across the compliance function during the interim period.
  • Ensure existing AML/CFT policies, procedures and controls are operating effectively and in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee higher-risk onboarding, Customer Due Diligence (CDD), Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) and complex client cases.
  • Act as the senior escalation point for AML, KYC/KYB and financial crime matters.
  • Review and make decisions on complex or higher-risk client applications in line with the Customer Acceptance Policy and Risk Appetite.
  • Provide guidance and practical support to compliance operations teams on day-to-day cases.
  • Identify immediate gaps or weaknesses in AML controls and implement proportionate remediation.
  • Support regulatory, audit and internal compliance requirements as needed.
  • Provide AML/CFT advice to senior management and relevant business teams.
  • Ensure appropriate escalation, investigation and reporting of suspicious activity.
  • Prepare relevant AML/financial crime management information and reporting for Senior Management.
  • Work closely with Compliance, Legal, Operations and Commercial teams to resolve regulatory and client-related issues.
  • Support priority AML and financial crime projects during the interim assignment.
  • Ensure effective handover and continuity of key MLRO responsibilities.

  • 10+ years' experience in Compliance, ideally within financial services or financial institutions.
  • Significant experience in a senior Compliance / MLRO role.
  • Experience of stepping into Interim MLRO roles is a must.
  • Strong knowledge of UK and EU AML/CFT regulations and industry best practice.
  • Strong understanding of KYC, KYB and Customer Due Diligence requirements.
  • Excellent regulatory knowledge and awareness within EMI and payments environments.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to build effective relationships across different teams and functions
  • ICA, CAMS or similar AML/Financial Crime qualification preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Law, Finance, Business or a related field
