Interim Payments Counsel

London | Hybrid | 6–12 Month Contract | September 2026 start

A leading global technology and consumer platform is seeking an experienced Payments Lawyer to join its EMEA legal team on an interim basis. This is a fast-paced role supporting the continued growth of a sophisticated payments ecosystem across multiple jurisdictions.

The Role

You will partner closely with product, compliance, regulatory, commercial and operational stakeholders, advising on a broad range of payments-related legal matters. The successful candidate will help support payment products, strategic partnerships and ongoing regulatory developments across the UK and Europe.

  • Advising on UK and European payments regulation, including PSD2, EMRs and related regulatory frameworks.
  • Supporting product and business teams on the launch and enhancement of payment products and services.
  • Drafting and negotiating commercial agreements with payment processors, financial institutions, banking partners and technology vendors.
  • Advising on regulatory change programmes and implementation projects.
  • Working closely with compliance, risk and operational teams on payments-related matters.
  • Providing pragmatic legal advice to senior stakeholders in a rapidly evolving environment.
  • Managing external counsel where required across multiple jurisdictions.

Candidate Profile

  • Qualified solicitor with significant experience in payments, fintech or financial services.
  • Strong knowledge of payment services regulation and the wider payments ecosystem.
  • Experience advising on commercial contracts relating to payments, banking, fintech or digital platforms.
  • Comfortable operating in a highly commercial, fast-moving and international environment.
  • Previous in-house experience preferred, although strong private practice candidates will also be considered.
  • Experience supporting technology, fintech, e-commerce or platform businesses would be advantageous.
