Interim Payroll Specialist - Interim Contract (3 Months) - Day rate between £300-350 - Hybrid working - Hertfordshire
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist to join a large, fast-paced organisation on an initial 3-month contract. This role will provide hands-on support across payroll operations while also identifying opportunities to improve processes, controls and systems. You will play a key role in ensuring payroll is delivered accurately and compliantly, while partnering with Finance and People teams to enhance efficiency and strengthen governance across payroll-related processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the end-to-end delivery of monthly and lunar payrolls, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Provide hands-on payroll cover during periods of increased workload and team absence.
- Manage payroll queries and support the resolution of payroll-related issues.
- Investigate and resolve payroll data and system interface issues across multiple HR and payroll platforms.
- Review and improve payroll workflows, ensuring payroll changes are captured, approved and processed efficiently.
- Identify opportunities to enhance controls, automation and data quality across payroll processes.
- Review payroll processes and procedures to ensure compliance with HMRC requirements and UK payroll legislation.
- Align payroll operations with People/HR policies and maintain up-to-date process documentation.
- Support payroll audits and implement recommendations to strengthen controls and governance.
- Analyse payroll data to identify discrepancies, overpayments or underpayments.
- Perform reconciliations and recommend appropriate corrective actions where required.
- Help standardise working pattern and absence-related processes to drive greater consistency in payroll calculations.

About You:

- Proven experience managing UK monthly and lunar payrolls.
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, statutory requirements and HMRC compliance.
- Experience working with payroll and HR systems, including managing system integrations and data interfaces.
- Good understanding of HR policies and processes that impact payroll.
- Strong analytical and reconciliation skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Advanced Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP and SUMIF/SUMIFS.
- Experience working with large ERP or financial systems would be advantageous.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively across Finance and HR teams.
- Able to work independently, manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines in a fast-moving environment.
