Bedfordshire Area - On-Site primarily

Job Reward

£500-£600 per day. Target applications welcome based on expectation. Expenses if required. Interim Assignment, 3 months initially could be ongoing. Inside IR35 - PAYE/Umbrella Only (No Limited Company Engagements)


About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Interim / Contract Engineering Manager to join a well-established FMCG manufacturing operation during an exciting period of development and operational improvement.

This is an excellent opportunity for a people-focused interim contract engineering leader who thrives on building high-performing engineering teams, developing engineering capability, and creating a proactive maintenance culture. You'll have the autonomy to influence site performance, strengthen engineering standards, and help shape the future direction of the function.

Working closely with the Site Leadership Team, you'll lead both engineering and support teams across a fast-paced manufacturing environment, ensuring engineering excellence, operational reliability, and continuous improvement remain at the heart of the operation.

The Opportunity

This role would suit a Site Engineering Manager, Head of Engineering, Senior Maintenance Manager, or Senior Engineering Leader who enjoys coaching others, creating accountability, and developing teams to achieve their full potential.

You'll inherit a capable team and be given the platform to drive engagement, improve performance, develop future talent, and implement best practice engineering standards at the site. Our client is a major manufacturing company, producing a distinctive range of products. You will be responsible for engineering, capital investment, and maintenance activities and overseeing the development and implementation of engineering initiatives to improve all elements of OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) and people development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a multi-disciplined engineering function
  • Create an engaged, accountable, and high-performing team culture
  • Drive engineering reliability and operational performance
  • Develop and implement robust preventative maintenance strategies
  • Support the site's continuous improvement and operational excellence journey
  • Develop engineering KPIs, performance measures, and improvement plans
  • Ensure full compliance with health & safety, engineering standards, and statutory requirements
  • Manage engineering budgets, resources, and expenditure effectively
  • Support capital projects, site improvements, and equipment reliability initiatives
  • Promote a proactive approach to maintenance, problem solving, and root cause analysis

What We're Looking For

  • Proven engineering leadership experience within FMCG, manufacturing, processing, food, beverage, packaging, or a similar 24/7 production environment
  • Strong people management, coaching, and team development capability
  • Track record of improving engineering performance and site reliability
  • Experience leading maintenance and engineering functions within a manufacturing setting
  • Comfortable operating at both strategic and operational level
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
  • A collaborative leadership style with genuine focus on developing people
  • Continuous improvement mindset with experience driving positive change
  • Experience in leading technical frontline maintenance, services, and project teams in manufacturing
  • Track record of using advanced manufacturing techniques (e.g., WCM/TPM/Lean)
  • HNC/HND/DEGREE within an engineering discipline, minimum, ideally a time-served apprentice engineer
