Hays are delighted to be supporting a large and complex public sector organisation with the appointment of a Systems Accountant on an initial 6-month contract.
This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified accountant with a passion for finance systems, digital transformation and data analytics to play a key role in modernising and enhancing the organisation's finance function.
Working at the intersection of finance and technology, this role will be instrumental in driving automation, improving financial processes and delivering meaningful management information through modern finance systems and reporting tools. The successful candidate will work closely with finance, IT and operational stakeholders to maximise the value of existing systems whilst helping shape the future direction of finance technology across the organisation.
The Role
Reporting into senior finance leadership, you will act as the subject matter expert for key finance systems, supporting ongoing development, optimisation and integration activities. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine technical accounting knowledge with systems expertise, helping to improve efficiency, strengthen reporting capabilities and support strategic decision-making.
You will play a key role in driving digital transformation initiatives, leveraging automation and business intelligence tools to enhance financial operations and provide valuable insights to stakeholders across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and implement opportunities to automate finance processes and improve operational efficiency
- Support finance transformation initiatives and drive the adoption of new technologies across the finance function
- Act as a systems expert for the organisation's ERP and finance systems, ensuring optimal performance and utilisation
- Work closely with finance and IT teams to deliver system upgrades, integrations and enhancements
- Support user acceptance testing and system troubleshooting activities
- Develop and maintain dashboards and management reports using Power BI and other reporting tools
- Translate complex financial and operational data into meaningful insights for senior stakeholders
- Deliver training and support to finance users, promoting best practice and system adoption
- Act as a change champion, supporting organisational transformation and continuous improvement
- Ensure robust governance, controls and documentation are maintained for all system developments and changes
- Support compliance with financial regulations, accounting standards and internal control frameworks
- Build strong relationships across finance, IT and operational teams to deliver successful outcomes

Candidate Profile
Hays are seeking an innovative and forward-thinking finance professional who combines strong accounting knowledge with experience of finance systems, reporting tools and digital transformation projects.
Essential
- Qualified Accountant (CA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) or nearing completion of qualification
- Experience working with ERP finance systems, ideally supporting system development and improvement
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting processes and accounting principles
- Demonstrable experience improving processes, implementing system enhancements or supporting digital transformation initiatives
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail
- Ability to translate technical information into clear and actionable insights for stakeholders
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively across cross-functional teams
