What's the role?
Part of the BRUSH Group, ETA are a Mechanical, Electrical & Public Health (MEP) engineering design consultancy delivering projects across complex buildings — including healthcare, research, education, and commercial sectors.
The Intermediate Mechanical Design Engineer will support the mechanical design team in developing coordinated, compliant, and efficient mechanical building services solutions. The role will include preparing calculations, technical drawings, specifications, and reports under the guidance of senior engineers.
The successful candidate will contribute to projects at all RIBA stages, attending design meetings, undertaking site surveys, and coordinating with internal and external design disciplines to ensure quality and timely delivery.
Working Conditions - Hybrid working (typical 3 days office, 2 days at home), 37.5 contractual hours per week, Monday - Friday.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and specification of mechanical building services systems including heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic water, drainage, and medical gases.
- Prepare design calculations, equipment schedules, and technical submissions under supervision.
- Develop schematic and layout drawings in collaboration with CAD/Revit teams.
- Support the preparation of technical reports, design narratives, and schedules for inclusion within tender and construction packages.
- Undertake and record site surveys and inspections.
- Liaise and coordinate with architectural, structural, and electrical teams as well as external consultants.
- Assist with compliance checks against HTMs, HBNs, CIBSE Guides, and Building Regulations.
- Support senior engineers in client and design team meetings by preparing materials and following up on actions.
- Contribute to practice improvements and maintain design quality standards.
- Work towards Chartered status (CIBSE/IMechE/IHEEM).

What We’re Looking For
- Degree or HNC/HND in Building Services or Mechanical Engineering
- Working towards professional membership (CIBSE/IMechE/IHEEM)
- Experience in mechanical building services design (consultancy or design-and-build)
- Familiarity with mechanical services for healthcare and complex building environments.
- Working knowledge of design software (IES, Hevacomp, Revit, AutoCAD, Excel).
- Awareness of UK Building Regulations, CIBSE Guides, HTMs, and HBNs.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a project team.
