I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
You will be embedded in the business, building relationships across every function and becoming the go-to communications partner for departments who want to tell their story or land an important message. You will own several of Shawbrook's key IC channels, lead the evolution of how we reach colleagues digitally, and ensure that when big things happen - a restructure, an acquisition, a policy change - communications are planned, sequenced, and delivered well.
You will also act as the bridge between Shawbrook's external narrative and its internal one - making sure that what we say to the market, to investors, and in the press is reflected in how we communicate with our colleagues.
This role reports to the Head of Communications and sits within the Group Strategy and Marketing function. It is a manager-level appointment working across Shawbrook's four hubs and seven brands.
Qualifications
- Around 5-8 years in PR, internal, or corporate communications, with at least a couple of those years managing channels and content calendars, not just contributing to them. This is a manager-level, hands-on role, not a strategist-only one - the right person still enjoys writing the all-colleague update themselves, not just briefing someone else to.
- Comes from a background where they've sat close to the business - could be IC, corporate affairs, or even a hybrid comms/change role - and has lived through at least one significant change programme (restructure, acquisition, systems migration) as the person actually writing and sequencing the communications, not just observing one.
- Financial services, professional services, or another regulated environment is a strong plus but not a dealbreaker - what matters more is comfort with process, consultation timelines, and getting sign-off right when the stakes are high.
- Practical experience with Microsoft 365, ideally someone who's been part of an intranet or digital channel project before, even in a supporting role.
- Formal qualifications are a nice-to-have, not a requirement. But successful candidates will be able to demonstrate evidence of building relationships across functions from a standing start and a portfolio of content creation.
- Type of person: positive, proactive, organised, calm under pressure, genuinely curious about what's happening. Someone who gets energy from being the person who "just knows what's going on." and has the confidence to engage with and consult senior stakeholders.
