Role Description
The Accountant will undertake a full-time, hybrid role based in Manchester and will be responsible for managing the day-to-day financial operations of Ebor Education.
The position will support the effective delivery, financial control and continued growth of the company’s education, tutoring, recruitment, compliance and guardianship services.
The Accountant will maintain accurate financial records, process invoices and payments, reconcile bank accounts, monitor income and expenditure, and prepare timely monthly and annual financial reports.
The role will also support budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow management, providing accurate financial analysis to assist directors and senior leaders with operational and strategic decision-making.
The postholder will help ensure compliance with applicable UK accounting, taxation and reporting requirements, maintain appropriate internal financial controls, and coordinate with external accountants, auditors, banks and professional advisers when required.
The Accountant will contribute to the development and improvement of financial processes, reporting systems and digital accounting controls across Ebor Education. This will include supporting the effective use of accounting software, spreadsheets and management-information systems.
The position involves regular collaboration with operational and administrative colleagues, clients and professional partners in the United Kingdom, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan and Europe. Professional working proficiency in both Mandarin Chinese and Japanese is therefore an essential requirement of the role.
The postholder must provide clear, accurate and timely financial information that supports the delivery of high-quality education, recruitment, compliance, tutoring and guardianship services.

Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate purchase, sales and nominal ledgers.
- Process supplier invoices, customer invoices, payments, expenses and receipts.
- Complete regular bank, credit-card and control-account reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly management accounts and support the preparation of annual financial statements.
- Monitor cash flow, income, expenditure, debtors and creditors.
- Assist with the preparation of annual budgets, financial forecasts and variance analysis.
- Support payroll administration, VAT reporting and other applicable tax processes.
- Maintain complete, accurate and well-organised digital and physical financial records.
- Ensure that financial activities comply with relevant UK legislation, accounting requirements and internal policies.
- Maintain effective internal controls and ensure that financial records remain ready for external review or audit.
- Liaise with external accountants, auditors, banks, professional advisers, suppliers and relevant authorities.
- Provide clear financial reports and explanations to directors, senior leaders and non-finance colleagues.
- Support financial due diligence, compliance checks and document verification where appropriate.
- Assist with the continued development of accounting systems, financial controls and reporting processes.
- Support financial administration relating to international students, families, agents and partner organisations.
- Assist with the financial management of tutoring, guardianship, recruitment and international programme activities.
- Monitor international payments, foreign-currency transactions and associated financial records.
- Handle personal, commercial and financial information with strict confidentiality.
- Work in accordance with Ebor Education’s safeguarding, equality, data-protection and professional-conduct requirements.
- Undertake other reasonable finance-related duties consistent with the level and responsibilities of the position.
Essential Qualifications, Experience and Skills
- A minimum of the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, part-qualified ACCA or CIMA status, or a recognised equivalent accounting or finance qualification.
- Strong financial-accounting skills, including ledger management, double-entry bookkeeping, bank reconciliation and the preparation of management accounts and financial statements.
- Practical experience of budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow monitoring and financial analysis.
- Sound knowledge of UK accounting principles, taxation requirements, VAT, payroll processes and financial compliance.
- Experience of maintaining effective internal controls and preparing financial records for audit or external review.
- Proficiency in recognised accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- The ability to maintain accurate, orderly and secure digital and physical financial records.
- Excellent analytical, numerical and problem-solving abilities.
- A consistently high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to explain financial information clearly to directors, operational colleagues and other non-finance stakeholders.
- The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and meet financial reporting deadlines.
- The ability to work effectively under the company’s hybrid arrangements and attend the Manchester office as required.
- Professional working proficiency in Mandarin Chinese.
- Professional working proficiency in Japanese.
- Professional proficiency in written and spoken English.
- The ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, families, clients and professional partners across different cultures and jurisdictions.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- The AAT Level 4 Diploma or active progression towards AAT Level 4, ACCA or CIMA qualification.
- Experience within education, international student services, recruitment, professional services or a similarly regulated environment.
- Experience of working with organisations or clients in mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan or Europe.
- Experience of Sage or a comparable cloud-based accounting platform.
- Knowledge of international payments, multiple currencies and cross-border financial administration.
- Experience of payroll processing and VAT-return preparation.
- Experience of preparing information for statutory accounts, external accountants or auditors.
- Proficiency in one or more additional European or Asian languages.

Salary: £38,000–£45,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience, with study support available for progression to AAT Level 4, ACCA or CIMA.
