Assistant Accountant

Heidelberg Materials is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to join our Business Service Centre team. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on accounting experience, build your technical knowledge, and contribute to the delivery of high-quality financial services across our international business.
About the Role
The Heidelberg Materials Business Service Centre (BSC) provides administrative, transactional, and accounting services to Heidelberg Materials companies across multiple countries. As an Assistant Accountant, you will play a key role in supporting the accounting function, assisting with the preparation of management accounts, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial analysis while ensuring the accurate and timely processing of financial transactions.

What You'll Be Doing
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Posting journals and financial uploads accurately into ERP systems
- Assisting with the preparation and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts
- Supporting monthly management accounting activities
- Contributing to quarterly forecasting and annual budgeting processes
- Identifying and resolving accounting issues using sound judgement and accounting principles
- Supporting financial controls and compliance within assigned areas
Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement
- Investigating non-standard accounting transactions
- Conducting root cause analysis on financial discrepancies and issues
- Recommending practical solutions to improve processes and controls
- Developing knowledge of accounting standards and business systems
Stakeholder & Customer Support
- Providing timely and professional responses to accounting queries
- Building effective relationships with internal stakeholders
- Delivering a high standard of customer service and support

What We're Looking For
Essential
- Currently studying towards a recognised professional accounting qualification (AAT, ACCA, CIMA, ACA or equivalent)
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Good communication and problem-solving abilities
- Proficient IT skills, including Microsoft Excel
- Ability to manage deadlines and work effectively within a team environment
Desirable
- Previous experience in a finance, accounting or shared service environment
- Experience working with ERP systems
- Understanding of basic accounting principles and financial controls
