Who We Are Looking For

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced payments professional to lead a high-performing operational team responsible for the oversight and execution of critical international payment activities. The successful candidate will act as the primary owner of State Street's CHAPS membership responsibilities, partnering closely with the Bank of England, industry bodies, and internal stakeholders to ensure operational resilience, regulatory compliance, and excellence in payment execution.

This includes Ownership and management of State Street’s CHAPS membership and operations, acting as the key point of contact between State Street and CHAPS Operations at The Bank of England, inclusive of CHAPS Assurance & Compliance, Industry Testing, Industry Change, and Operational incident management & Post incident analysis.

The role also includes collaboration with global payments colleagues ensuring effective ownership of processes, procedures, risk & controls relating to CHAPS and wider international payments processing. First or second line management of local team members, oversight of our daily GBP activity between State Street and the UK Market (Via CHAPS), oversight and control of all daily international payments processes ensuring deadlines are met and risks and errors are minimized.

  • Become the key point of contact between State Street and CHAPS
  • Accountable for CHAPS Assurance and Compliance obligations on behalf of the Payments Team, ensuring adherence to Bank of England requirements, internal policies, and industry standards.
  • Represent State Street at CHAPS industry forums, working groups, testing events, and change initiatives and assess the operational impact of regulatory, market infrastructure, and industry changes, ensuring timely implementation and preparedness.
  • Escalation and management of incidents/issues
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of payment professionals, creating a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, automation, controls, and client outcomes across payment processes and supporting infrastructure.
  • Partner with Risk, Compliance, Audit, and Operational Resilience teams to address findings and strengthen the control environment, for example Procedure or Business Continuity reviews
  • Lead regulatory and internal audit engagements relating to CHAPS and payments operations.
  • Oversee day to day GBP payment flows and balances through the UK CHAPS scheme
  • Oversee and participate in mandatory market/industry testing throughout the year
  • Manage and oversee BAU processes and all activity in a variety of payment queues and systems ensuring the team are accurate, timely and processing meets all required deadlines
  • Efficiently assist internal and external clients with complex research, queries and issues
  • Ensure errors and exposure to financial loss are minimized
  • Oversee the effective functioning of the global team and the transition of workflow between different geographical locations
  • Complete monthly and ad hoc reporting and MI as required.

What We Value

These skills will help you succeed in this role

  • Demonstrable experience within a CHAPS, RTGS, correspondent banking, or international payments environment.
  • Strong understanding of UK payment market infrastructures, including CHAPS.
  • Knowledge of ISO 20022 messaging standards.
  • Experience in a cash or banking role is preferred
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience within a payments operations environment
  • Overall knowledge of cash related financial services products
  • Flexibility in working hours (required)
  • Ability to work under pressure in a deadline driven environment
  • Attention to detail

Education & Preferred Qualifications

Professional qualifications in banking, payments, risk management, or operations are advantageous but not required
