INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS TEAM LEAD
2 Positions Available | Volunteer | Remote | Flexible
Debt & Dominion is an international, student-led publication covering economics, international relations, global governance, diplomacy and geopolitical affairs.
We are looking for two International Relations Team Leads to oversee our IR writers and help maintain the quality and consistency of our publication.
This is a voluntary, unpaid position. There is no salary, stipend or financial compensation attached to this role.

We are looking specifically for candidates who:
- Are currently studying, or have completed, a degree in International Relations or Economics.
- Attend or have graduated from a university in the UK, Australia, USA, France or India.
- Have a genuine academic background in International Relations, Economics or a directly relevant discipline.
- Have strong research, analytical and written communication skills.
- Are able to critically review and edit other people's work.
- Can commit to approximately 2–4 hours per week on a flexible basis.
- Can reliably communicate with their team and meet agreed deadlines.
- Are comfortable working independently and taking responsibility for their team.

- Your degree is unrelated to International Relations or Economics.

As an International Relations Team Lead, you will be responsible for overseeing a small group of IR contributors and helping ensure their work progresses from assignment to publication.
Your responsibilities will include:
Editorial Leadership
- Review and provide constructive feedback on submitted articles.
- Ensure articles meet Debt & Dominion's editorial and research standards.
- Help writers strengthen their arguments, structure, evidence and analysis.
- Identify weaknesses in research, sourcing or factual accuracy.
- Work with writers to ensure revisions are completed to deadline.
Production & Deadlines
- Monitor your team's progress throughout each publication cycle.
- Ensure assigned articles are progressing on schedule.
- Flag delays or communication issues early.
- Maintain regular communication with writers and the wider editorial team.
- Help prevent last-minute submissions from disrupting the publishing schedule.
Independent Research
Team Leads will also have the opportunity to develop their own independent research and editorial pieces for Debt & Dominion. This may include:
- Geopolitical analysis
- International security
- Diplomacy and foreign policy
- Global governance
- International political economy
- Emerging geopolitical developments
- Independent research projects
We want Team Leads to be editors and researchers, not simply administrators.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for someone who can say:
"I can read an article critically, identify what needs improving, explain why, and help the writer get it to publication standard."
You should be comfortable questioning arguments, checking evidence and asking writers to go back and strengthen their work where necessary.
You do not need to be an expert in every area of international relations.
You do need to be academically grounded in the subject and capable of conducting serious research.

TIME COMMITMENT
Approximately 2–4 hours per week.
The role is deliberately designed to be compatible with university study, work and other commitments.
There are no fixed daily hours.
However, flexible does not mean inactive.
You will be expected to:
- Check communications regularly.
- Respond within a reasonable timeframe.
- Keep track of your team's progress.
- Meet agreed deadlines.
- Communicate early if you cannot complete something.
WHAT YOU RECEIVE
As a volunteer Team Lead, you will have the opportunity to:
- Take on an early leadership position within an international student publication.
- Build editorial and research experience.
- Lead contributors from different countries.
- Develop independent research for publication.
- Build a professional portfolio.
- Work alongside our Economics, Editorial, Graphics, Social Media and YouTube teams.
- Receive a professional reference letter, subject to satisfactory contribution and completion of the required period.
- Receive a recommendation letter where applicable.
There are no fees to join Debt & Dominion.
OUR EXPECTATIONS
We are a volunteer organisation, so we understand that university, work and personal commitments come first.
What we do not accept is poor communication, unexplained inactivity or repeatedly missed deadlines.
If you cannot contribute during a particular period, tell your Lead or the HR team. Communication allows us to plan. Silence does not.
