Large Business employs around 2,500 people to assure the compliance of HMRC's 2,000 largest and most complex customers. The size and global reach of our customers places international tax issues at the forefront of our work to ensure they comply fully with their tax obligations.
Mid-Sized Business is part of Wealthy and Mid-Sized Business Compliance (WMBC). WMBC is responsible for the tax affairs of customer groups including the UK's wealthiest individuals, Mid-sized businesses, public bodies and charities. MSB supports and assures the compliance of these businesses, which includes a variety of multinational, complex customer groups and their tax obligations.
What We Offer

As an International Tax Specialist, you will play an integral role in strengthening HMRC's efforts to close the tax gap. Leading and supporting on some of the most ambitious, technical, and high-profile enquiry cases for some of the UK's largest multinational groups.
Your workload will be varied, consisting of risk assessment, enquiry work, real-time working, and will involve interacting with external customers and their representatives across a range of industries. You will work as a team with a number of key colleagues across the organisation including Customer Compliance Managers, cross-tax regime technical specialists, policy, economists and accountants.

In this role you will have an opportunity to aid capability building of tax specialists through mentoring, training and knowledge sharing and contribute to building of the International Tax community.
Travel may be required from time to time to fulfil this role, for example to attend customer meetings.
Person specification
Essential Criteria
- Good recent experience of International Tax or Transfer Pricing work in HMRC, industry or practice.
- Good communication skills - both written and verbal.
- Good stakeholder management and collaboration skills - ability to work across a range of stakeholders both internally and externally.
Qualifications
You Should Hold One Of The Following Qualifications
- Chartered Tax Adviser (CIOT)
- Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (CIOT)
- AIIT (including Paper 4*)
- A Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) membership qualification including: Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales (ICAEW), Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS) Institute of Chartered Accountants Ireland (ICAI) Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
- Post Graduate full legal qualification - in taxation matters
- For previous or existing HMRC employees TSP or predecessor qualification (TPDP, IDP, ITS2, CPT FT2) - (note - existing HMRC employees would only be eligible if they have completed the appropriate course to get them to G7 level (or above) as a tax professional).
- Solicitor, Barrister or CILEX Lawyer (including the Professional stage Business and Commercial Law module) in England and Wales (or equivalents in Scotland and Northern Ireland) with direct tax professional experience.
- Equivalent overseas degrees/professional qualifications to the qualifications noted above.
In October 2023, a decision was made that applicants for G7 Tax Professional roles must have successfully completed the Tax Specialist Programme or hold an equivalent qualification. To enable career development for experienced colleagues already in Tax Professional roles, if you have been successful in gaining a G7 Tax Professional role through open competition prior to October 2023, and you are not subject to any Performance Management action, you are now able to apply on level transfer for other G7 Tax Professional roles. Please note that if you applied for a non-tax professional role on promotion to Grade 7 prior to October 2023 but have tax experience, you would not be able to apply on level for tax professional roles.
The panel may consider candidates who can demonstrate a level of professional expertise and technical capability that is demonstrably equivalent to the qualifications listed above. This would normally be evidenced through substantial and sustained senior-level experience applying transfer pricing and/or international tax rules. Any such consideration would be assessed rigorously on its own merits against the standards expected of the specified qualifications.
