International Trade & Logistics Specialist

Job Description

The International Trade & Logistics Specialist is responsible for coordinating and optimising the Company's import and export operations while supporting international trade compliance activities. The role ensures the compliant, efficient and cost-effective movement of goods across international borders, working closely with customers, freight forwarders, customs brokers and internal stakeholders.

The position acts as the Company's subject matter expert for day-to-day export and import activities, supporting customs compliance, freight management, shipping documentation and regulatory requirements. The role also contributes to continuous improvement initiatives, logistics performance monitoring and trade compliance activities to support business growth and customer satisfaction.

Working closely with Supply Chain, Operations, Procurement, Sales, Finance and Quality teams, the International Trade & Logistics Specialist will maintain robust customs and logistics processes while helping to reduce risk, improve service levels and drive operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Import & Export Operations

  • Manage day-to-day export and import activities for goods shipped internationally and domestically by air, sea and road.
  • Coordinate shipment schedules with customers, freight forwarders, customs brokers and internal departments.
  • Prepare and review shipping documentation including commercial invoices, packing lists and other relevant customs documentation.
  • Ensure shipments are delivered in accordance with customer requirements, contractual commitments and regulatory obligations.
  • Monitor shipment progress and proactively resolve transportation, customs clearance and delivery issues.
  • Maintain accurate shipment records and reporting data within company systems.

Customs & Trade Compliance

  • Support the Company's compliance with UK and international customs regulations.
  • Ensure import and export declarations are completed accurately through customs brokers and logistics providers.
  • Maintain compliance records and supporting documentation for audit and regulatory purposes.
  • Assist with customs audits, HMRC enquiries and internal compliance reviews.
  • Support classification, origin and customs valuation activities where required.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and support implementation of compliance process improvements.

Logistics & Freight Management

  • Manage relationships with freight forwarders, customs brokers and transportation providers.
  • Obtain freight quotations and support transport provider selection for shipments.
  • Monitor freight costs and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and cost reduction.
  • Support logistics performance KPI, including delivery performance, lead times and service levels.
  • Assist in the implementation of logistics process improvements and operational best practices.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience in import/export operations, international logistics or supply chain coordination.
  • Strong understanding of international shipping processes and documentation requirements.
  • Experience working with freight forwarders, customs brokers and transportation providers.
  • Knowledge of customs procedures and international trade compliance requirements.
  • Experience using ERP systems and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable

  • Experience within a manufacturing, engineering, defence or regulated industry environment.
  • Awareness of UK export control regulations and sanctions compliance.
  • Knowledge of customs classification, origin determination and customs valuation.
  • Understanding of aviation security requirements and Known Consignor regulations.
  • Understanding of inventory management, warehouse operations or supply chain planning.
  • Professional qualification in international trade, logistics or customs compliance (e.g. Institute of Export & International Trade, ICS qualification or equivalent).

This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires the jobholder to obtain certain authorisation or security clearances that will require interface with local and U.S. government authorities.
