American Express is recruiting for the role of Campus – Internship Programme – Undergraduate AI Engineer – 2027 (UK – Burgess Hill). This internship involves helping to build, test and integrate AI-enabled solutions in a global enterprise environment. You will also work with engineers and other partners while learning how AI systems are designed, delivered and governed responsibly.

What you’ll do
- Support the development and integration of AI and machine learning models, LLM integrations or intelligent services.
- Assist with data collection, preprocessing, transformation and management for model training, testing and evaluation.
- Contribute to testing, debugging and improving AI-enabled solutions.
- Support AI capabilities including model training workflows, inference endpoints, prompt-based interactions and evaluation routines.
- Collaborate with engineering, product, data, risk, security and business partners on AI-driven solutions.
- Document technical details to support reproducibility.
- Take part in Agile practices and team ceremonies.
- Help ensure AI systems and features meet expectations for reliability, safety, governance, security and compliance.

What they’re looking for
- Be currently enrolled in a Master’s degree programme in a technical field.
- Have knowledge of Python and foundational data processing technologies.
- Understand core computer science concepts including data structures, algorithms, debugging, testing and problem solving.
- Understand machine learning concepts such as model training, evaluation, feature engineering and experimentation.
- Have experience using modern AI systems such as LLM APIs, prompt-based interactions, retrieval patterns or generative AI applications.
- Be aware of responsible AI, security, governance, compliance and reliability considerations.
- Have strong communication, collaboration, documentation and learning agility.

Additional role information
- The internship is part of the Enterprise Technology Services team.
- Interns may be aligned to scrum teams across several engineering areas.
- The role may support work across machine learning, generative AI, intelligent automation, data pipelines, retrieval patterns, model evaluation, AI agents, agentic workflows or AI-enabled software features.
- You will learn how AI-enabled software is designed, built, tested and delivered in an enterprise environment.
