Duration: 12 month fixed contract, potential to become permanent
Hours: 35 hours per week, Hybrid working of 3 days (60%) in the office. We welcome applications from those seeking flexible or part time hours.

Band & Salary: Band 4C £43,588 - £53,167

About The Role

Consolidate, critically review and provide technical advice and guidance on inventory accounting and governance to identify and monitor risks, opportunities and efficiencies to minimise the financial and legal impact on the business area.

Provide robust professional recommendations and financial guidance on inventory accounting guidelines and standards to enable the business to be financially and legally compliant.

Provide technical and professional oversight of the periodic accounts, relevant analysis and preparation of periodic reporting to enable the business to effectively manage inventory holdings.

Identify, evaluate, and implement improvements to inventory processes, reporting and systems, including Oracle, FAMS, NROL, automation opportunities and emerging technologies such as AI.

Influence, coach and challenge stakeholders to improve inventory management practices, optimise inventory holdings, reduce risk and drive more effective business decision-making.

Provide professional financial advice, insight and challenge on inventory performance, leading key stakeholder discussions to support decision-making, minimise risk and deliver strong governance.

Engage with business inventory management teams to monitor and evaluate obsolescence risk; developing policy and challenging decision making to enforce governance and minimise financial losses. Propose and substantiate obsolescence provision for inclusion in group interim and annual accounts.

Provide evidence in support of inventory holdings and collate responses to specific questions raised by the National Audit Office during annual interim and final audits.

Drive continuous improvement across inventory finance processes, controls and reporting, enhancing governance, business insight and team resilience through effective knowledge sharing, documentation and process development.

Your Experience And Skills

Essential

  • Strong stakeholder engagement, influencing and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships, provide challenge and communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Relevant experience working in a complex financial environment, including managing business risks, financial controls, governance, and supporting business decision-making.
  • Experience in managing ambiguity in a financial environment with strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
  • Experience of analysing complex financial and operational information to identify risks, opportunities and support decision-making.
  • Evidence of driving continuous improvement through process optimisation, automation, systems development, or reporting enhancements.
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline, for example accounting and finance, business management or equivalent demonstrable experience in finance.

Desirable

  • Membership (or working towards membership) of a relevant accounting body (CIMA/ACCA/ICAEW) or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of inventory management, governance risk assessment and translating financial data into meaningful business insight.
  • Knowledge of technical inventory accounting and application of that knowledge in a complex and commercial environment.
  • Knowledge of inventory accounting systems, interfaces, and data flows across the end-to-end supply chain process. Experience of Oracle-based systems and the use of financial or operational reporting tools such as Power BI, Power Query or equivalent analytical tools.
  • Understanding of the principles of managing public money (including assets), financial governance and the importance of maintaining effective financial controls within a regulated environment.
  • Experience of leading change, continuous improvement or cross-functional projects to successful completion.
