An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Investigations Officer to join a leading London-based university within its Appeals and complaints team. This role plays a key part in ensuring fair, transparent and evidence-based investigation processes across student complaints, appeals, disciplinary and Fitness to Practise matters.
You will act as a trusted adviser to colleagues and senior stakeholders, managing complex investigations from inception through to outcome, providing expert guidance, and contributing to the continuous improvement of investigation practices across the University. This is a highly visible role, requiring excellent judgement, stakeholder management and report-writing skills.

Working pattern: Required to go on site once per month
Key Responsibilities
Investigations & Case Management
- Independently manage a caseload of student complaints, appeals, disciplinary and Fitness to Practise investigations.
- Plan and scope investigations, identifying key issues, stakeholders, relevant policies and required evidence.
- Lead complex and sensitive investigations, ensuring impartiality, procedural fairness and compliance with university regulations.
- Manage cases through to completion, ensuring agreed timescales and service standards are met.

Evidence Gathering & Analysis
- Gather, review and critically assess complex evidence, records, statements and correspondence.
- Conduct and support interviews and meetings as part of investigations.
- Analyse competing or conflicting information to reach balanced, evidence-based conclusions.
- Produce detailed chronologies, case summaries and findings where required.
Reporting & Advisory Support
- Prepare high-quality investigation reports, clearly setting out findings, conclusions and recommendations.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to Schools, Departments and Professional Services colleagues.
- Support formal hearings and appeals processes, advising panel members and stakeholders where appropriate.
- Ensure findings and outcomes are communicated clearly and professionally to all parties involved.
Stakeholder Engagement & Compliance
- Build effective relationships with academic and professional service teams across the University.
- Act as a key point of contact for investigation-related queries and guidance.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulatory requirements and University procedures.
- Maintain accurate, secure and auditable case records throughout the investigation process.

Continuous Improvement & Training
- Identify trends, recurring issues and opportunities to improve investigation practices.
- Contribute to the development of guidance, templates, policies and procedures.
- Deliver coaching, training and support to colleagues conducting investigations.
- Support the University's commitment to fair, transparent and consistent decision-making.
Candidate Profile
- Experience managing formal investigations or complex casework from start to finish.
- Strong understanding of complaints, appeals, disciplinary processes or Fitness to Practise investigations.
- Experience working within Higher Education, public sector, regulatory or governance environments.
- Ability to analyse complex evidence and produce clear, accurate and well-structured reports.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills.
- Strong understanding of procedural fairness, compliance and risk management.
- Experience of delivering guidance, training or coaching to colleagues.
- Highly organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet challenging deadlines.
