Investment Accounting Manager

We are working with a large life insurer who are looking to appoint an experienced Investment Accounting Manager to lead their investment accounting function. This is a senior role requiring strong investment accounting expertise, leadership experience and, importantly, previous experience within the insurance sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the investment accounting function through to trial balance, ensuring accurate, timely and well-controlled outputs across monthly, quarterly and year-end close.
  • Oversee journals, ledger postings, reconciliations, valuations, accruals, income recognition and related accounting activities.
  • Own the investment accounting financial control environment, ensuring key controls are performed, evidenced and reviewed, with issues identified and remediated effectively.
  • Lead analytical review of investment results, including movement analysis and key market drivers such as yields, credit spreads, FX, inflation, duration and asset mix.
  • Oversee valuation and pricing controls for complex, illiquid and judgemental assets, including the use and governance of pricing models.
  • Support the implementation of new investment products, asset classes and transactions from an accounting and control perspective.
  • Drive process improvements to simplify and standardise processes, reduce manual workarounds and improve the quality and resilience of financial close.
  • Lead, coach and develop a team of trainee and qualified accountants.
  • Manage relationships with offshore service providers and monitor service delivery and KPIs.
  • Build strong relationships with Investment Operations, Financial Accounting, Actuarial, Risk, Governance, Reporting and Audit teams.

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Significant experience within the insurance sector, ideally life insurance, with-profits, unit-linked or annuity businesses.
  • Strong investment accounting experience across areas such as fixed income, derivatives, funds, mortgages, private credit, property, infrastructure and other illiquid assets.
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS 9 and UK GAAP investment accounting, including classification and measurement, fair value, income recognition, amortisation and impairment.
  • Proven experience producing investment accounting outputs through to trial balance, including journals, reconciliations, valuations and control checks.
  • Experience leading finance teams and managing financial close deliverables.
  • Strong understanding of valuation methodologies, pricing controls and fair value considerations for complex and illiquid assets.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex accounting and valuation matters clearly.
  • A proactive approach to identifying control, process and data issues and delivering sustainable improvements.
  • Experience with Python, SQL or another analytical/coding tool within a finance, valuation or reporting environment would be advantageous, with Python particularly desirable.
  • Experience working with internal/external audit and within a robust financial control framework would be beneficial.
