IT Developer Graduate Programme

Start date: September 2027

Salary: starting at £41,000 p.a

Are you looking to kickstart your career at a company where you can truly make an impact? Whether we’re delivering power to millions, trading in new markets around the globe, or driving the rapid growth of renewable energy, RWE is at the forefront of the industry. But we wouldn’t be there without world-class IT.

About the role

The IT Developer Graduate Programme is designed for graduates who want to build a career in software engineering and application development, placing you at the heart of our commercial business.

Through a series of hands-on technical rotations, you’ll work closely with analysts and business support teams to deliver solutions for our energy trading and commercial operations teams, while developing expertise in programming, cloud-native technologies and DevOps practices.

Along the way, you’ll broaden your technical stack and business knowledge, gain experience across a range of programming languages and working environments, and build an understanding of different teams and cultures, providing a strong foundation for your permanent role and long-term career development.

You’ll learn about our global business from the inside – working on meaningful projects in areas including:

  • Application development.
  • Embedded IT for our commercial business such as trading of energy commodities, freight and logistics, commercial asset optimisation or sales and origination.
  • Enterprise Integration focus on the transport layer within RWEST’s application landscape and works closely together with other IT and business teams to optimise the systems.
  • Market Data Solutions are the fuel for decision-making, automated trading, and fundamental analysis within the Energy Trading industry.
  • Central Services are positioned in middle layer (Integration) applications connecting to various other departments like BackOffice, Risk and Front Office etc. involving incident management, automated standard service requests, working with concepts of DevOps and Squad model and migration of application to cloud based infrastructure.
  • IT projects with business attention such as “Lead in Data” or “Lead in Cloud”.

Digital technologies, including AI-enabled tools, are becoming an integral part of how we work at RWE. Throughout the programme, you will have opportunities to use these tools responsibly to enhance productivity, support decision-making, foster innovation and improve ways of working, always in line with RWE policies and responsible use principles.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
