Contract: Until 27 March 2027

Location: West Cumbria / Warrington / London / Harwell, Oxford

Working Pattern: Hybrid – 40% office attendance per week

Security Clearance: SC Clearance required

Contract Type: Umbrella

Role Type: Digital / IT Infrastructure

Pay Rate: £650 Per Day via Umbrella


About the Role

We are currently seeking an experienced IT Environment Manager to take responsibility for the management, governance and continuous improvement of complex IT environments across both on-premises and cloud platforms.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced infrastructure professional to take ownership of a diverse technology estate, working across infrastructure, networks, cloud, security, architecture and third-party service providers.


Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee networks, servers, cloud platforms and security controls across the IT estate.
  • Deliver infrastructure upgrades, optimisation programmes and migrations.
  • Manage third-party suppliers and managed service providers to ensure technology services are maintained effectively.
  • Define and implement technical standards and controls for on-premises and cloud environments.
  • Ensure IT environments comply with security policies and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical input into architecture and solution design.
  • Review and approve supplier proposals, technical designs and solution architectures.
  • Manage technology risks across IT assets and implement appropriate mitigation controls.
  • Support improvements to performance, resilience, lifecycle management and incident response.
  • Work collaboratively with Cyber Security, Enterprise Architecture, Information Governance and external stakeholders.
  • Support ongoing technology transformation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage the lifecycle of configuration items.
  • Support ongoing compliance with Cyber Essentials Plus requirements.
  • Act as an intelligent customer when managing third-party MSPs across infrastructure, network and cloud services.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • 10+ years' experience in IT infrastructure, network administration, systems engineering or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience as an Infrastructure Manager, IT Environment Manager or similar senior role.
  • Strong enterprise infrastructure knowledge, including:
    • Windows Server
    • VMware
    • Storage solutions
    • Active Directory
    • Microsoft Entra ID
    • Microsoft Azure
  • Strong networking knowledge, including HPE, Fortinet, WAN connectivity and network security.
  • Strong understanding of IT security, backup and disaster recovery.
  • Experience in infrastructure design, project management and technical delivery.
  • Proven experience managing third-party suppliers and MSPs.
  • Experience working within a highly regulated or compliance-driven environment.
  • Strong understanding of technology risk and experience implementing risk mitigation controls for legacy IT environments.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a matrix management structure.
  • Strong technical governance and assurance experience.
  • Current SC Security Clearance.

Desirable Experience

  • Knowledge of new and emerging technologies, including AI and Quantum, and their potential impact on existing and future IT environments.
  • Experience developing IT security reporting and assurance measures.
  • Experience acting as an intelligent customer for outsourced IT services.
  • Exposure to GovAssure, Cyber Assessment Framework (CAF) and Cyber Essentials Plus.
  • Experience within government, critical infrastructure or another highly regulated environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for helping to ensure:

  • Clear, documented and approved technical standards across IT environments.
  • Secure, resilient and compliant IT systems.
  • Effective management and mitigation of technology risks.
  • Strong governance and assurance of third-party technology services.
  • Continuous improvement of infrastructure performance, resilience and lifecycle management.
  • Ongoing compliance with relevant cyber security standards and requirements.

SC Security Clearance is required for this position.
