Job Title: IT Network and Firewall Specialist
Location: Barnsley (Hybrid after 3 months)
Duration: 6 Months FTC
Salary: Competitive
Job Overview
As a Network and Firewall Specialist, you will deliver a major enterprise programme focused on reducing cyber risk through firewall remediation, Zero Trust segmentation, and least-privilege access across the organisation. You will lead the identification and remediation of firewall and segmentation risks from audits and security assessments, including overly permissive rules, lateral movement exposure, DMZ weaknesses, and inadequate outbound controls.
The role is responsible for:
- Designing and implementing a secure segmentation model across user, server, management, Tier-0, and DMZ zones, enforcing controlled inter-zone communication and eliminating unnecessary east-west traffic.
- Owning firewall policy governance, ensuring rules are business-justified, least-privilege, fully logged, and regularly reviewed, including removal of “any/any” access and reduction of Active Directory exposure.
- Coordinating remediation delivery with Infrastructure, Cyber Security, and third parties, ensuring alignment with audit requirements and enterprise security standards.
- Managing and optimising Cisco Secure Firewall (FTD/FMC) environments, including IPS enablement, logging, and operational firewall governance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
