Role Overview

The SAP S/4HANA Finance Phase Lead is responsible for planning, coordinating, and governing the delivery of the Prepare, Explore, and subsequent Realise phases of a global S/4HANA Greenfield implementation. The role acts as the primary orchestration point across Finance Process Owners, Design Authorities, Scrum Masters, and delivery teams to ensure successful design, build, testing, and deployment outcomes. The Phase Lead provides leadership, structure, and governance across the Finance workstream while ensuring adherence to SAP Activate methodology, Fit-to-Standard principles, and programme delivery objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Phase Planning & Delivery

  • Lead planning and execution activities during the Prepare and Explore phases.
  • Establish and maintain the overall phase structure, governance, milestones, and delivery plans.
  • Define key deliverables, activity owners, dependencies, and critical success factors.
  • Transition the Finance workstream into the Realise phase, ensuring readiness for build and testing activities.

Workshop & Design Management

  • Plan, schedule, and facilitate Fit-to-Standard (F2S) workshops.
  • Define workshop objectives, expected outcomes, and stakeholder responsibilities.
  • Coordinate with Finance Process Owners and Design Authorities to align design decisions and workshop schedules.
  • Drive requirements clarification and support solution design discussions.

Agile Delivery Leadership

  • Support adoption of Agile and SAP Activate ways of working.
  • Coach and guide Scrum Masters on programme standards, governance, and delivery expectations.
  • Facilitate sprint planning activities with Process Owners, Design Authorities, and Scrum Masters.
  • Manage team capacity and resource allocation across Finance delivery teams.

Resource & Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the primary escalation point for Finance delivery teams.
  • Identify resource requirements and coordinate staffing requests across client and system integrator organisations.
  • Work closely with programme leadership, Process Owners, Design Authorities, and business stakeholders to resolve issues and manage priorities.
  • Ensure alignment between business objectives, solution design, and delivery execution.

SAP Finance Leadership

  • Provide SAP Finance subject matter expertise throughout design and delivery phases.
  • Challenge and validate requirements against SAP standard capabilities and best practices.
  • Support decision-making related to Finance process design, solution adoption, and programme priorities.
  • Promote Fit-to-Standard principles to maximise standard S/4HANA functionality and minimise unnecessary customisation.

Required Experience

  • 10+ years of SAP programme delivery experience.
  • Proven experience leading Finance workstreams or delivery phases on SAP S/4HANA transformation programmes.
  • Strong understanding of SAP Activate methodology and Fit-to-Standard approaches.
  • Experience managing global design workshops, Agile teams, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead delivery teams through Explore, Realise, and Testing phases.
  • Experience working in complex, multi-vendor programme environments.
