IT Support Apprentice

As an IT Support Apprentice, you will provide first-line, hands-on IT support to users across the business while working towards the Level 3 Information Communications Technician Apprenticeship Standard. The main focus is hardware, desktop and user support, including diagnosing and resolving straightforward IT faults and more.

What you'll do at work

IT Support and User Support

  • Log, categorise and prioritise IT faults and service requests received by telephone, email, or other approved channels (internal ticketing system).
  • Provide professional first-line support, gathering clear information to diagnose hardware, software and connectivity issues.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve routine issues, keeping users informed and escalating complex or business-critical matters appropriately.

Hardware, PC and Laptop Support

  • Carry out daily checks of meeting and conference room technology, testing screens, video conferencing, audio and other equipment and escalating or resolving faults as appropriate.
  • Prepare, install, configure, test and deploy PCs, laptops and associated equipment.
  • Install and configure Windows 11, standard software and required updates.
  • Set up and troubleshoot monitors, docking stations, keyboards, mice, webcams, headsets, printers, scanners, projectors, screens and other peripherals.
  • Diagnose common hardware faults and carry out basic repairs, replacements and routine equipment checks under supervision.
  • Prepare equipment for users and assist with its collection, replacement, redeployment and secure disposal.

Networking and Connectivity

  • Assist with basic network and connectivity troubleshooting, including cables, ports, switches and wireless connections.
  • Connect IT equipment to the network and use appropriate tools to test and identify straightforward connectivity faults.
  • Escalate issues requiring higher-level network investigation or infrastructure changes.

Business Systems and Communications

  • Provide first-line support for WinMan ERP, retail EPOS and scales systems in line with established procedures.
  • Assist with basic troubleshooting of telephone, communications and meeting-room equipment.
  • Develop broader awareness of business system integrations, including EDI, API and FTP/SFTP, through supervised learning.

User Accounts and Access

  • Assist with user account setup and routine access and password requests in line with authorised procedures.
  • Follow security and data protection requirements and escalate matters outside the apprentice’s authority.

IT Assets and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate IT asset records, including equipment allocation, location and status.
  • Assist with receiving, labelling, deploying, recovering and recording IT equipment.
  • Record faults, actions and resolutions and contribute to user guides, technical documentation and standard procedures.
  • Identify recurring issues and provide information to support service improvements.

Learning and Development

  • Attend apprenticeship training and complete the Level 3 Information Communications Technician qualification, using protected study and off-the-job training time.
  • Shadow experienced IT colleagues and progressively develop from supervised tasks to independent ownership of routine activities.
  • Develop practical knowledge of relevant IT technologies, tools, processes and service management practices.

  • Apply the appropriate tools and techniques to undertake fault finding and rectification
  • Apply Continuous Professional Development to support necessary business output and technical developments
  • Operate safely and securely across platforms and responsibilities maintaining the security of personal data of internal and external stakeholders
  • Communicate with all levels of stakeholders, keeping them informed of progress and managing escalation where appropriate
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, customers and other relevant stakeholders
  • Manage and prioritise the allocated workload effectively making best use of time and resources
  • Complete documentation relevant to the task and escalate where appropriate
  • Install or undertake basic software upgrades, either physically or remotely
  • Establish and diagnose the extent of the IT support task, in line with the organisation's policies and Service Level Agreements
  • Provide remote/F2F support to resolve customer requirements
  • Maintain a safe working environment for own personal safety and others in line with Health & Safety appropriate to the task
  • Identify and scope the best solution informed by the system data associated with the task
  • Test and evaluate the system's performance and compliance with customer requirements.
  • Escalate non routine problems in line with procedures
  • Use basic scripting to execute the relevant tasks for example PowerShell, Linux
  • Carry out routine maintenance across systems, (such as IT, Communications), ensuring organisational compliance at all times
  • Apply the necessary security, in line with access and/or encryption requirements
  • Use a range of Cabling or Connectors equipment in line with technical requirements for example physically or remotely
  • Test and evaluate network environments
  • Monitor performance and usage of a network
  • Deploy applications on a network
  • Set up storage and data access for staff
  • Apply necessary security measures, in line with access requirements to a network
  • Carry out routine maintenance across network systems, ensuring organisational compliance
  • Monitor network-related workloads including DNS and firewalls
  • Install or undertake basic upgrades, either physically or remotely
  • Establish digital communication or telecommunications systems through, for example cabling and connecting equipment.
  • Identify a range of tools and or diagnostic equipment, for example, Hardware or Software components, to resolve Communications or Telecommunications requirements.
  • Undertake basic telecommunications activities, in response to an allocated task, designated responsibilities, instructions or customer’s requirements.

Training schedule

  • Expected duration: 17 months

During this apprenticeship, you will follow a fully supported training programme with LearnTech, delivered through combined weekly remote classroom-based training, workplace assessment/training and online learning working towards completing the Information Communications Technician qualification. Other requirements

It is a requirement to have five GCSE 9-4 grades or equivalent (including English and maths) to apply for this type of apprenticeship. If you do not have these grades but have completed numeracy and literacy Key Skills/Functional Skills at level two you may also apply for these apprenticeships.

You must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply for the role:

  • Have been a UK/EEA resident for the last 3 years
  • Hold valid residency status
  • Have the right to work in the UK
