IT Asset Management (ITAM) Architect

Role Purpose

The ITAM Architect is responsible for defining, designing, and governing the enterprise IT Asset Management strategy, architecture, processes, and tooling. The role ensures effective management of hardware, software, cloud, and digital assets throughout their lifecycle while supporting compliance, cost optimisation, operational efficiency, and business transformation initiatives.

The ITAM Architect serves as the technical authority for ITAM solutions and works closely with Infrastructure, Security, Procurement, Finance, Service Management, and Technology teams to establish a sustainable and scalable asset management capability. The role commonly includes responsibility for ServiceNow HAM Pro, SAM Pro, CMDB integrations, discovery tooling, and governance frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Architecture

  • Define and maintain the enterprise ITAM architecture and roadmap.
  • Develop target operating models for Hardware Asset Management (HAM), Software Asset Management (SAM), and Cloud Asset Management.
  • Create solution blueprints, standards, design principles, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture, security, governance, and compliance requirements.

ServiceNow & ITAM Platform Architecture

  • Design and govern ITAM solutions using ServiceNow and related platforms.
  • Lead architecture decisions for HAM, SAM, CMDB, Discovery, Procurement, and ITSM integrations.
  • Define scalable integration patterns between asset repositories, procurement systems, ERP platforms, discovery tools, and cloud environments.
  • Ensure data quality, integrity, and consistency across the asset ecosystem.

Asset Lifecycle Management

  • Design processes covering:
    • Asset procurement
    • Deployment
    • Inventory management
    • Software licence management
    • Maintenance and support
    • Asset retirement and disposal
  • Establish governance controls and approval workflows.
  • Ensure lifecycle processes support auditability and regulatory compliance.

Software Asset Management

  • Define software licensing and entitlement management strategies.
  • Support software compliance programmes and vendor audits.
  • Drive optimisation initiatives to reduce software spend.
  • Establish software reclamation and licence harvesting processes.

Hardware Asset Management

  • Define standards for hardware inventory and lifecycle control.
  • Implement tracking, reconciliation, ownership assignment, and disposal processes.
  • Support asset refresh and sustainability programmes.

Governance & Compliance

  • Establish ITAM policies, standards, and operating procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with licensing agreements, regulatory requirements, and internal controls.
  • Lead internal and external audit activities relating to IT assets.
  • Develop KPIs, reporting frameworks, and maturity assessments.

Technical Skills

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience in IT Asset Management architecture and governance.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • ServiceNow HAM Pro
    • ServiceNow SAM Pro
    • CMDB
    • Discovery and inventory platforms
    • ITSM processes
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud.
  • Experience integrating ITAM tools with procurement, finance, and ERP systems.

Industry Knowledge

  • ITIL framework knowledge.
  • Understanding of software licensing models from major vendors including Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, SAP, Adobe, and VMware.
  • Knowledge of ISO 19770 and ITAM best practices.

Leadership Skills

  • Ability to define enterprise strategies and operating models.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
  • Excellent communication, workshop facilitation, and documentation abilities.
  • Experience leading technical teams and architecture governance boards.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related discipline.
  • ITIL Foundation (minimum).
  • ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist (SAM Pro and/or HAM Pro desirable).
  • TOGAF certification desirable.
  • ITAM, IAITAM, or similar asset management certification desirable.
