We are looking for an experienced Senior Java Backend Engineer to design and build high-performance, real-time data processing platforms within a large enterprise environment. This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong Java 17+, Spring Boot, Kafka and distributed systems expertise, with particular emphasis on low-latency processing, event-driven architectures, Change Data Capture (CDC) and high-volume transactional systems. You’ll develop scalable backend solutions capable of capturing, processing, transforming and distributing millions of data events while maintaining sub-second processing times, reliability and resilience.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop high-performance, low-latency backend applications using Java 17+.
- Build real-time data processing solutions handling high-volume transactional workloads.
- Develop event-driven architectures using Kafka and asynchronous messaging patterns.
- Build scalable Spring Boot microservices and backend APIs.
- Implement real-time Change Data Capture (CDC) solutions using Debezium or similar technologies.
- Architect distributed systems capable of processing millions of events with sub-100ms latency.
- Develop real-time data synchronisation across multiple platforms.
- Optimise application performance through profiling, concurrency, JVM tuning and latency analysis.
- Build resilient services using caching, asynchronous processing and circuit-breaker patterns.
- Deploy and operate containerised applications using Kubernetes and Docker.
- Troubleshoot production issues using Dynatrace, Splunk and Grafana.
- Perform root-cause analysis, code reviews and drive engineering best practices.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
