About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Java Developer to join our dynamic team on a 12-month contract basis. This hybrid role offers the flexibility of working from multiple UK office locations, combined with remote working arrangements. As a key member of our software engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting scalable and secure software products that underpin various digital user-focused services. You will work closely with architecture, engineering, and product teams to deliver high-quality solutions that meet business needs and technical standards. Your expertise will guide the team in adopting best practices, ensuring the delivery of reliable and maintainable systems. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful projects in a fast-paced environment, leveraging your deep technical knowledge and leadership skills to drive innovation and excellence.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in Java software development, particularly in complex, medium- to high-impact environments.
  • Strong proficiency with Spring Boot framework and modern backend engineering practices.
  • Hands-on experience working with cloud platforms, preferably Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Experience designing and implementing event-driven or distributed systems using Kafka.
  • Proficiency in working with MongoDB for data storage and retrieval.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, test, debug, and document complex programs, services, or scripts following industry standards.
  • Excellent understanding of service resilience, operational stability, and production support.
  • Ability to guide and mentor team members on modern software engineering standards, methods, and tooling.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to review and select appropriate technologies for system design.
  • Effective collaboration skills to work with cross-functional teams including product managers, architects, and user researchers.

Responsibilities

  • Design and lead strategies for creating reusable Java libraries, services, and software components that promote efficiency and scalability.
  • Shape medium to long-term technical strategies for product lines, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with architecture and engineering teams to design robust, resilient, and scalable systems capable of handling high user demand.
  • Champion best practices in software engineering, including writing clean code, comprehensive testing, documentation, and maintainability.
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve infrastructure and production issues promptly to minimize downtime and maintain service quality.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering community to foster innovation and skill development.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and project planning to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Support the integration of new technologies and tools to enhance development processes and product performance.
  • Work closely with product teams to ensure solutions meet genuine user needs, emphasizing accessibility and user experience.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior team members, fostering a culture of learning and excellence.
