Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and senior Java Developer to take a technical leadership role in designing, developing, and delivering scalable, secure, and high-performance enterprise applications. This position requires deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot, as well as strong leadership in guiding development teams and driving technical excellence.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading the technical direction of backend systems
- Mentoring junior developers and fostering a high-performance culture
- Collaborating with stakeholders to align technology with business goals
- Ensuring solutions meet scalability, security, and performance requirements
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Lead the design, development, and maintenance of enterprise-grade backend applications using Java (8/11/17+) and Spring Boot.
- Define and enforce technical standards, coding practices, and best practices.
- Provide technical mentorship to developers, conduct code reviews, and ensure high-quality, maintainable, and secure code.
- Collaborate with Solution Architects and Engineering Managers on architecture decisions and technology roadmaps.
- Drive cloud-native development, including microservices, containers, and modern DevOps practices.
Application Development
- Design and implement RESTful APIs and microservices architecture.
- Develop scalable, resilient, and high-performance backend services.
- Integrate with internal and external systems (APIs, messaging, event-driven architectures).
- Ensure compliance with security, performance, and reliability standards.
- Optimise database interactions, caching, and system scalability.

DevOps & Continuous Improvement
- Support and enhance CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes.
- Work with DevOps teams on containerisation (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes), and cloud deployments.
- Contribute to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) initiatives (e.g., Terraform).
- Participate in release planning, production deployments, and incident resolution.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Work closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Architects, QA, and DevOps.
- Translate business requirements into technical solutions.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Competencies
✅ 8+ years of software development experience with Java (Spring Framework, dependency injection, multithreading, concurrency). ✅ Strong expertise in Spring Boot (2.x/3.x), including Reactors/Spring WebFlux (if applicable). ✅ Deep knowledge of enterprise-grade design patterns (e.g., MVC, Repository, Factory, POJO-based access). ✅ Microservices architecture – design, implementation, and scalability. ✅ RESTful APIs – best practices for design, security (OAuth2, JWT, JWT), and versioning. ✅ ORM & Databases – Hibernate/JPA, relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Cassandra). ✅ Message brokers – Kafka/RabbitMQ for event-driven communication. ✅ Cloud platforms – AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud (GCP) (IaaS, PaaS, serverless). ✅ Containerisation & orchestration – Docker, Kubernetes, Helm. ✅ Application security – encryption, authentication (OAuth2/JWT), authorization (RBAC), secure coding. ✅ Performance tuning & monitoring – profilers, logging (Log4j), monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana). ✅ CI/CD & Version Control – Git (including branching strategies), Jenkins/GitHub Actions. ✅ Agile/Scrum methodologies – experience leading iterative development.

Leadership Experience
🔹 Proven track record leading development teams in agile environments. 🔹 Ability to mentor junior developers, drive engagement, and uphold code quality. 🔹 Experience managing technical deliverables, backlog prioritisation, and release planning.
Preferred Skills & Experience
✨ Government/public sector experience – working in regulated environments (e.g., GDS-aligned projects). ✨ Cloud-native architectures – serverless, event-driven systems, and scalable microservices. ✨ Infrastructure as Code (IaC) – Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible. ✨ Advanced monitoring & observability – ELK, Splunk, distributed tracing. ✨ Certifications – OCP (Java), AWS/Azure/GCP certifications, Kubernetes certifications (CKA/CKAD). ✨ Domain-Driven Design (DDD) – modelling complex business domains. ✨ API-first development – integrations, versioning (OpenAPI), and rate-limiting.
Nice-to-Have Skills
✳ Experience in digital transformation programs (government/enterprise offerings). ✳ Exposure to highly regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, banking, fintech). ✳ Leading geographically distributed teams (global or hybrid). ✳ AI-assisted development tools (e.g., AI code generation, static analysis, pruning). ✳ Knowledge of WebSockets, GraphQL, or event sourcing.
