Contract Java / React Developer
Location: London – Hybrid, 2–3 days per week in the office
Contract: 6 months initially

Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Java / React Developer to join a technology team within a leading financial services organisation on an initial 6-month contract. The role is suited to a strong full-stack developer with a Java backend focus and React frontend experience, who has worked extensively in enterprise environments and has recent hands-on experience using modern AI-assisted development tools. You will be working across the full development lifecycle, contributing to the design, development and delivery of scalable applications within a regulated financial services environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain enterprise applications using Java and React.
- Develop robust backend services and APIs using Java, with a strong focus on clean, scalable and maintainable code.
- Build and enhance modern frontend applications using React.
- Work with PostgreSQL for data modelling, querying and application development.
- Collaborate with architects, developers, testers, product owners and other stakeholders to deliver new functionality.
- Contribute to technical design, code reviews, testing and continuous improvement.
- Work within established engineering standards, security requirements and development practices.
- Make effective use of modern AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity, code quality and development workflows.

Essential Experience
- 8+ years of professional software development experience, with a strong focus on Java and React.
- Strong commercial experience developing applications using Java.
- Strong hands-on experience with React and modern frontend development.
- Good experience working with PostgreSQL / PostgreSQL databases.
- Recent hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude and/or Codex.
- Approximately 2–3 years of experience with modern AI-assisted development tooling or demonstrable recent adoption of these tools in a professional engineering environment.
- Experience working within financial services, banking or another highly regulated environment.
- Strong understanding of software engineering principles, development practices and enterprise application architecture.
- Experience working effectively within Agile / collaborative engineering teams.

Desirable
- Experience developing and integrating RESTful APIs and microservices.
- Experience with cloud-based development environments.
- Familiarity with CI/CD and modern DevOps practices.
- Experience working with large-scale enterprise applications.
- Experience working in regulated environments with strong security and governance requirements.
The Opportunity
This is an opportunity to join an established financial services technology function where you will be able to contribute to a modern Java and React development environment while making use of the latest AI-assisted engineering tools.
The initial contract is 6 months, with the role operating on a hybrid basis in London, requiring 2–3 days per week in the office.
