About The Role

We are currently seeking a highly skilled Senior Java Developer for a 12-month contract opportunity. This role offers a hybrid working model with multiple office locations across the UK, providing flexibility and a collaborative work environment. The successful candidate will play a critical role in designing, building, and supporting software products that serve as the backbone for various digital, user-focused services. You will work closely with architecture, engineering, and product teams to develop scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions that align with modern engineering standards. Your expertise will help guide the wider engineering team, ensuring best practices are followed and technical strategies are effectively implemented.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in Java software development, particularly within complex, medium- to high-impact environments.
  • Proficiency with Spring Boot and modern backend engineering practices.
  • Hands-on experience working in cloud-based environments, ideally AWS.
  • Knowledge of event-driven or distributed systems, with experience using Kafka.
  • Experience working with MongoDB and understanding of NoSQL database management.
  • Proven ability to design, code, test, document, and troubleshoot complex software solutions.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide and mentor other engineers in applying modern engineering standards and tools.
  • Experience in designing systems with medium levels of technical or business complexity, including reviewing designs and technology selection.
  • Understanding of service resilience, operational stability, robustness, and production support.
  • Excellent collaboration skills to work effectively with product, architecture, user research, and delivery teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design and lead strategies for building reusable Java libraries, services, and software components that enhance system functionality and maintainability.
  • Shape medium to long-term technical strategies for product lines and contribute to the wider software engineering community within the organization.
  • Collaborate with architecture and engineering teams to design robust, resilient, and scalable systems that meet business requirements.
  • Champion software engineering best practices, including writing clean code, comprehensive testing, documentation, and adherence to modern standards.
  • Identify, investigate, and support the resolution of infrastructure and production issues to ensure system stability and performance.
  • Promote knowledge sharing, continuous learning, and process improvements across the engineering teams to foster a culture of excellence.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and mentoring to elevate team capabilities and ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Assist in designing and implementing scalable cloud-based solutions, leveraging AWS services and best practices.
  • Support operational aspects of the software, including monitoring, incident response, and system enhancements.
