Overview
Our client is looking for an experienced Java Developer to join one of several feature teams supporting a large-scale internal application used by both call centre and in-branch colleagues. This is a hands-on engineering role at AVP level, suited to someone who can quickly contribute to delivery, produce high-quality code, and help develop junior team members.
Key Requirements
Technical Skills
- Strong commercial experience with Java, Spring Boot and APIs
- Minimum 5 years' software development experience
- Confident working across the full software development lifecycle
- Able to understand business requirements and translate them into scalable, maintainable solutions
- Strong coding standards and code review capability
AI & Modern Engineering
- Comfortable leveraging AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot and similar Agentic AI solutions
- Strong understanding of prompt engineering
- Ability to effectively review, validate and improve AI-generated code
- Interest in driving productivity and best practices through AI-enabled development

Team Structure
- Multiple delivery teams supporting the application
- Typical team consists of 5 Developers and 1 Tester
- Approximately 6 teams in total
- Reporting directly to an Engineering Manager
Project Environment
The successful candidate will join a feature team working on an established business-critical application used across the wider business. Whilst specific projects will vary, the focus is on delivering new features and enhancements, maintaining high engineering standards, and contributing to the ongoing evolution of the platform.

Salary
AVP Level
Up to £65,500 base salary
Interview Process
Stage 1 - Hiring Manager Interview (60 minutes)
Conversation with HM covering:
- Career motivations and drivers
- Team collaboration and communication style
- Software development experience
- Problem-solving approach and working practices
Stage 2 - Technical Assessment (90 minutes)
- Live coding exercise via Microsoft Teams
- Real-world development scenario
- Focus on problem-solving, coding quality and engineering approach
- Paired Programming
Final Stage
Likely offer stage (potential additional HR conversation depending on process)
