About The Role

We are seeking a skilled Java Developer to join our client's dynamic team on an initial six-month contract basis. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work within a public sector organization focused on delivering impactful digital solutions. The successful candidate will primarily work remotely, with occasional visits to either the Edinburgh or Glasgow offices. The Java Developer will play a pivotal role in enhancing and supporting customer-facing products, ensuring they meet high standards of quality, security, and usability. This position requires a proactive individual with a strong background in software development, agile practices, and cloud technologies, particularly within AWS environments. The role offers a competitive daily rate of up to £490 outside IR35, based on experience, and provides a platform to contribute to meaningful public sector projects that impact citizens and stakeholders alike.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of technical expertise and practical experience, including:

  • Proven experience with Java 11+ and Python 3 in a professional setting.
  • Hands-on experience with Spring Boot, Python Flask microservices, and Spring Security with OAuth2.
  • Strong skills in JavaScript UI frameworks, particularly React, along with HTML and CSS, with an emphasis on accessibility considerations.
  • Familiarity with OpenShift and modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, Jenkins, and Docker.
  • Experience designing and developing solutions using relational databases such as Postgres and NoSQL databases like MongoDB.
  • Demonstrable experience working in high-performing, cross-functional teams delivering high-quality software.
  • Knowledge of cloud services, including AWS Lambda, S3, CloudFormation, Aurora/Postgres, API Gateway, and CDK, is desirable.
  • Understanding of service and event-based architectures, human-centered design practices, and legacy system modernization.
  • Proficiency with testing frameworks, telemetry tools like Grafana, and infrastructure as code.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for a broad range of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Continuously enhancing the customer-facing product portfolio based on user feedback to improve usability and functionality.
  • Developing and supporting customer-facing applications aligned with product and architecture roadmaps, focusing on digital sustainability and technical debt reduction.
  • Demonstrating sustainable, collaborative, and high-quality software development practices that produce maintainable and readable artifacts.
  • Providing software development services by participating actively in team events, leading where specialized knowledge is required, and supporting process improvements through inspection and adaptation.
  • Engaging with wider communities of practice to share knowledge, techniques, and experiences, fostering continuous learning.
  • Ensuring high-quality solutions through comprehensive unit testing, code coverage, and code analysis using industry-standard tools.
  • Ensuring developed solutions meet non-functional requirements such as security, accessibility, UI/UX, performance, and maintainability.
  • Troubleshooting development and production issues across multiple environments, including modern AWS stacks and legacy systems involving ETL and databases.
  • Practicing collaborative development techniques such as pairing, mobbing, code reviews, and system design sessions.
  • Mentoring and coaching team members to enhance overall team capability and knowledge sharing.
  • Supporting disaster recovery planning and execution, aiming for a recovery time objective of two hours and recovery point objective of zero, with regular testing over the fiscal year.
