As a Java Developer, you will play a pivotal role in modernising a critical clearing platform, helping to deliver a resilient, scalable, and future-ready ecosystem. Working as part of a high-performing agile team, you will design and deliver integration solutions that enable secure and efficient business operations while supporting strategic transformation goals. You will collaborate with business and technology stakeholders, champion engineering excellence, embrace AI-enabled ways of working, and contribute to building a modern platform that creates lasting value for our clients.
Hybrid working:
The places that you work from day to day will vary according to your role, your needs, and those of the business; it will be a blend of Company offices, client sites, and your home; noting that you will be unable to work at home 100% of the time.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver scalable, resilient services and integration capabilities that support the successful replacement of legacy clearing platforms.
- Design and implement high-quality solutions that enable secure, reliable, and efficient exchange of information across business-critical systems.
- Contribute to the delivery of event-driven and cloud-native architectures that improve agility, scalability, and operational resilience.
- Collaborate with architects, product teams, and stakeholders to translate business priorities into effective technical solutions.
- Participate throughout the software delivery lifecycle, ensuring solutions meet functional, non-functional, security, and operational requirements.
- Promote engineering excellence through clean, maintainable, and well-tested solutions that support long-term sustainability.
- Drive automation and continuous improvement across development, testing, deployment, and operational processes.
- Monitor, analyse, and optimise application performance to improve reliability, service quality, and user outcomes.
- Support knowledge sharing, mentoring, and capability growth across the engineering community, helping to build a future-ready workforce.
- Champion innovation, continuous learning, and responsible adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices to enhance delivery effectiveness and business value.
Must-Have Skills:
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in software engineering, including significant involvement in delivering production-grade platforms within financial services or similarly regulated environments.
- Proven experience designing and delivering enterprise-scale, mission-critical applications and integration solutions.
- Strong expertise in Java application development, including designing and developing microservices-based architectures.
- Proven experience with Java 21 and Spring Boot in large-scale enterprise environments.
- Strong hands-on experience with Apache Kafka, including messaging patterns, stream processing, and event-driven architecture.
- Experience with Kafka Streams, Schema Registry, Kafka Connect, and Kafka deployment automation practices.
- Demonstrable experience developing and deploying containerised applications using Kubernetes, OpenShift, Docker, and Helm.
- Experience building and supporting secure, scalable RESTful APIs and integration services within complex enterprise landscapes.
- Strong knowledge of cloud-native architecture principles, distributed systems, scalability, resilience, and fault-tolerant design.
- Expertise in software engineering best practices including object-oriented design, design patterns, secure coding, automated testing, and quality-focused delivery.
- Experience implementing and supporting CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Bamboo, ArgoCD, BitBucket, or equivalent platforms.
- Experience working with relational and non-relational databases, including data integration and performance optimisation.
- Strong knowledge of observability practices and monitoring solutions, including logging, tracing, performance management, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar platforms.
- Experience working within Agile delivery environments and collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience supporting DevOps practices, automation initiatives, and modern software delivery approaches.
- Ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions and influence decision-making across business and technology stakeholders.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of financial markets, clearing, settlement, post-trade processing, or capital markets environments would be highly advantageous.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, innovation, and the effective adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices.
- Proven ability to mentor colleagues, share knowledge, and contribute to building a future-ready engineering workforce.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
