About The Role
FDM Group Ltd is seeking experienced Lead Java Engineers to join our team supporting a major enterprise technology modernization program for our global systems integrator client. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead the design, development, and enhancement of critical digital services that underpin high-volume business processes and essential public-facing applications. As a Lead Java Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in guiding engineering teams, shaping technical strategies, and delivering scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions. This position is initially offered as a 5-month contract with excellent prospects for extension. It is a remote role, with occasional travel to the client site in Telford, providing flexibility and exposure to large-scale enterprise environments.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in enterprise application development using Java, with significant experience leading technical teams in agile environments. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in building and maintaining APIs, microservices, and modern software architectures. A solid understanding of object-oriented design principles, design patterns, and best practices in software engineering is essential. Experience with Spring Boot, JUnit, and automated testing frameworks is required. Additionally, familiarity with source control systems, collaborative development workflows, and cloud technologies such as AWS will be advantageous. Strong communication, stakeholder management, and mentoring skills are vital for success in this leadership role.

Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and maintenance of enterprise Java applications using modern engineering practices and frameworks.
- Provide technical leadership across Scrum teams supporting the modernization of legacy platforms and services.
- Define technical approaches and ensure solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and supportable.
- Design and oversee the development of RESTful APIs and microservices utilizing Java and Spring Boot.
- Collaborate with Architects, Delivery Managers, and business stakeholders to shape solution designs and technical roadmaps.
- Provide technical oversight of software development activities, ensuring adherence to engineering best practices.
- Lead code reviews, establish high standards for code quality, testing, and documentation.
- Support testing, deployment, defect resolution, and live service activities to ensure seamless operations.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across engineering teams and delivery processes.
- Manage technical risks, dependencies, and issues across multiple workstreams.
- Mentor and coach Senior, Mid-Level, and Junior Engineers to foster skill development and knowledge sharing.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, contribute to delivery planning, and ensure alignment with project goals.
- Ensure solutions comply with security, governance, operational, and quality standards.
- Provide regular progress updates and technical reports to program stakeholders to facilitate transparency and informed decision-making.
