About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Java Engineer to join our dynamic Tech department. In this permanent, full-time position based in Wallingford, UK, with a hybrid work model, you will serve as a technical leader responsible for guiding the architecture and engineering standards of GTI's core SaaS platform. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will not have direct line management responsibilities but will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction of our platform. Your expertise will enable you to design, implement, and review high-quality Java and full-stack solutions, APIs, and integrations that are scalable, resilient, and secure. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including Product, Data, Operations, DevOps, and QA—to ensure the delivery of robust solutions aligned with business objectives. Your leadership will be instrumental in driving performance optimization, security best practices, and operational excellence, ensuring our systems remain reliable and efficient. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence the technological future of GTI, mentor engineering teams, and uphold the highest standards of engineering excellence.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Extensive experience in Java software engineering with demonstrated technical leadership
  • Expertise in Java (Java 21 LTS), JVM performance tuning, and modern language features
  • Deep knowledge of Spring Boot, Hibernate ORM, JPA, and enterprise application architecture
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, resilience, and performance optimization
  • Experience with cloud-native applications, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines (GitLab, Jenkins)
  • Solid knowledge of application security, OWASP principles, and secure SDLC practices
  • Familiarity with front-end frameworks such as Angular or similar
  • Experience with microservices, event-driven architecture (RabbitMQ), and RESTful APIs
  • Proficiency in observability tools, logging, metrics, and monitoring systems
  • Experience with MySQL, Apache Solr, and container orchestration in AWS/Linux environments
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills
  • Proactive, pragmatic, and outcome-focused approach to problem-solving
  • Mentoring capabilities and a collaborative working style

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for GTI's core SaaS platform, ensuring architecture is scalable, resilient, and secure
  • Own and evolve the application architecture across multiple products and services, aligning with business goals
  • Design, develop, review, and optimize high-quality Java and full-stack solutions, APIs, and integrations
  • Lead initiatives to enhance system performance, scalability, and resilience
  • Drive security best practices, vulnerability mitigation, and secure software development lifecycle adherence
  • Collaborate with Data, Operations, DevOps, and QA teams to ensure architectural alignment and operational excellence
  • Translate business and product requirements into robust technical solutions, supporting product roadmaps
  • Mentor and guide engineering teams to improve technical capabilities, quality, and delivery outcomes
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards, architectural principles, and development best practices
  • Conduct design and code reviews to ensure maintainability, quality, and consistency across projects
  • Lead root cause analysis for complex production issues and implement corrective actions
  • Enhance system observability, monitoring, and operational performance to meet reliability targets
  • Partner with Operations, DevOps, and QA teams to ensure production stability and high service quality
  • Promote a culture of operational excellence, continuous improvement, and proactive issue prevention
