About The Role
We are seeking an experienced and opinionated Principal Java Engineer to join our high-performing engineering team. This role is pivotal in designing and developing low-latency, high-throughput systems within the payments processing domain. Based in the UK, this hybrid position offers an exciting opportunity to build scalable, real-time services utilizing modern cloud and container technologies. The ideal candidate will possess a strong passion for performance optimization, deep expertise in Core Java and Spring Boot, and thrive in a collaborative yet opinionated engineering environment. As a key technical leader, you will influence architectural decisions, mentor peers, and drive initiatives to improve system resilience, observability, and performance.

Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional experience in Java development, with a focus on performance and memory optimization
- Proficiency in MongoDB, Spring Boot, and microservice architecture
- Hands-on experience with low-latency, high-throughput application development (sub-millisecond response times preferred)
- Experience deploying applications on Red Hat OpenShift and/or Kubernetes environments
- Strong cloud platform knowledge, especially AWS services such as ECS, EKS, Lambda, and S3
- Excellent communication skills with a proactive, action-oriented approach
- Demonstrated ability to make opinionated design decisions and drive technical excellence
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimize backend systems that require low latency and high throughput using Java
- Build and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices supporting secure payment workflows
- Work with messaging standards and protocols common in financial transactions, ensuring compliance and reliability
- Deploy, monitor, and scale applications within Red Hat OpenShift and AWS cloud environments
- Integrate with NoSQL and SQL datastores such as MongoDB for real-time data management
- Collaborate closely with DevOps, Product, and QA teams to deliver production-grade solutions
- Lead architectural initiatives, advocate for best practices, and mentor junior team members
- Drive performance tuning, fault tolerance, and observability improvements across services
