(Contract) Java Payments Integration Specialist
Location: Remote (UK-based)
Contract: Outside IR35 (if applicable), 6 month initial contract
Day Rate: £400-500/day
Start: Immediate / ASAP
We're looking for an experienced Java Payments Integration Specialist to join an engineering team delivering enterprise-scale payment solutions. This is a fantastic opportunity to work fully remotely from anywhere in the UK, developing secure, scalable payment integrations used by organisations processing high volumes of payments.
You'll be working on modern payment infrastructure, integrating with payment gateways, acquiring banks, processors and financial institutions using the latest Java technologies. What You'll Be Doing:
- Design, develop and enhance Java-based payment integration services
- Build secure REST APIs and microservices supporting high-volume payment processing
- Integrate with payment gateways, acquiring banks, card processors and alternative payment providers
- Develop scalable, resilient cloud-native applications
- Implement secure transaction flows using modern authentication, encryption and security best practices
- Troubleshoot payment processing and production issues
- Work closely with QA, DevOps and architecture teams throughout the software lifecycle
- Monitor system performance and continually improve reliability and scalability
- Ensure solutions comply with PCI DSS and payment industry best practice
- Produce technical documentation and integration guides
- Contribute to architectural decisions and continuous platform improvements

Essential Experience:
We're particularly interested in engineers/developers with experience across both Java development and payments technology. You'll ideally have experience with:

- Strong Java development experience within enterprise applications
- Commercial experience building payment integrations
- Payment gateways, acquiring banks or card processor integrations
- REST API and Microservices development
- Spring Framework / Spring Boot
- Distributed systems and high-volume transaction processing
- Cloud technologies (AWS preferred)
- Docker and Kubernetes
- Secure application development and encryption
- PCI DSS and payment security standards
- Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills
Desirable Experience:
Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
- EMV and card payment technologies
- Financial messaging standards
- Kotlin
- React or JavaScript
- C++ -.NET
