Java Software Engineer — Low Latency · Proprietary Trading · London
Miller Maxwell is retained by one of London's most respected proprietary trading firms to find a Java Software Engineer for their core engineering team. This is not a support role or a maintenance position — you will be building the front-office trading systems the firm's traders and quant researchers depend on, in real time, every day the market is open.
The firm is well-capitalised, privately owned, and genuinely invests in its engineering talent. The codebase is modern, the problems are technically interesting, and the people around you will push you.
The Java Software Engineer position will:
- Work directly on the core trading engine — building new components, improving performance, and taking end-to-end ownership of high-visibility projects that are already in the pipeline.
- Collaborate closely with front-office traders and quantitative research teams, which means your work has immediate, visible impact rather than disappearing into a backlog.
- Thrive in a fast-paced and technically uncompromising environment. If you want to work on software where performance genuinely matters and the stakes are real, this is it.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
