About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled JavaScript / Node.js Developer to join our dynamic team on a long-term, fully funded Central Government programme based in Cheltenham. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work within a modern, containerized environment, contributing to the development of secure, business-critical applications. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and deploying backend services and APIs, ensuring the stability and security of enterprise-level applications. The position requires a collaborative mindset, as you will work closely with cross-functional teams including developers, testers, platform engineers, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality software solutions. The role offers a hybrid working model, requiring two to three days onsite per week, with travel expenses covered through an approved travel allowance. This position is ideal for professionals looking to make a meaningful impact within the public sector, utilizing their expertise in modern development frameworks and container orchestration tools.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in commercial software development, specifically within JavaScript and Node.js environments. Candidates should have demonstrable experience working with container orchestration and deployment tools such as OpenShift and Kubernetes, along with a solid understanding of Docker. Experience with CI/CD pipelines and tooling is essential, as is familiarity with Agile development methodologies. Candidates must hold active SC security clearance and be willing to undergo DV clearance if necessary. A background in developing and supporting enterprise-level applications within secure, containerized environments is highly desirable. Additional skills in TypeScript, React, Java Spring Boot, Helm, Ansible, Jenkins, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, Redis, UNIX/Linux scripting, Infrastructure as Code, or cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure will be considered advantageous. Applicants should demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to technical challenges.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a broad range of tasks throughout the software development lifecycle. Key responsibilities include:
- Designing, developing, and maintaining secure software applications and microservices, with an emphasis on backend services and APIs built using JavaScript and Node.js.
- Deploying and supporting applications within OpenShift and Kubernetes environments, ensuring optimal performance and security.
- Developing containerized applications using Docker and supporting their integration into CI/CD pipelines.
- Troubleshooting issues across development, testing, and production environments to maintain system integrity.
- Contributing to technical discussions, influencing engineering decisions, and promoting best practices within the team.
- Collaborating with various stakeholders, including developers, testers, and platform engineers, to ensure seamless delivery of solutions.
- Supporting the continuous improvement of engineering processes and maintaining high standards of code quality, security, and performance.
