Outline summary

Sworders’ Jewellery Department holds regular auctions throughout the year, showcasing an exciting range of antique, vintage, and contemporary jewellery, watches, and silver.

We are seeking a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Cataloguer to join our Jewellery team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for jewellery, gemstones, and exceptional craftsmanship to play a key role in researching, assessing, and cataloguing items for auction. The successful candidate will contribute to the preparation and delivery of our jewellery sales, while supporting specialist projects and single-owner collections, helping to maintain the high standards of expertise, presentation, and client service for which Sworders is renowned.

Responsibilities

  • Work within the department to undertake cataloguing of items consigned for sale, be proactive in researching items to ensure accuracy.
  • Catalogue a wide variety of jewellery entered for auction, ensuring compliance with house cataloguing styles.
  • Testing precious metals and gemstones.
  • Organising photography.
  • Working closely with the team to understand customer drivers and help maintain an industry-leading service.
  • Provide detailed condition reports and supporting imagery for all lots catalogued.
  • Support in the production of the department’s valuations.
  • Assist in the production of the catalogue, inspecting proofs and participating in feedback discussions.
  • Monitor condition reports and pre-sale enquiries across all platforms, providing timely additional information and photographs to clients as required.

  • Assist in the organisation and management of departmental stock and support day-to-day operations.

  • Assisting with saleroom preparation and lotting up for sale.

  • Help organise and manage departmental stock, including labelling, locating, and maintaining accurate records of items for sale.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure items are prepared and presented effectively for cataloguing and photography.

  • Attend team meetings as required, actively putting forward ideas and views that enhance department development.

  • Provide general administrative support to the team where appropriate.

  • Adhere to Sworders internal policies and procedures.

Person Specification

Essential skills

  • A firm interest in jewellery.
  • Strong analysis skills with an eye for detail and accuracy in evaluating jewellery and antiques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency in IT systems, particularly Microsoft Excel, for record keeping and data analysis.
  • Organisational skills to manage multiple valuations efficiently while maintaining high standards of accuracy.
  • A minimum of 3 years of jewellery cataloguing, research, and condition reporting experience.
  • An unwavering approach to providing exceptional client service.
  • Excellent organisational skills with outstanding attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to take on additional tasks/responsibilities where needed.
  • Self-motivated, confident, proactive.
  • The ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Enthusiastic with a willingness to learn.

Desirable skills
