Job Title: Kitchen Assistant

Reports to: Head of Guest Experience

Period of Appointment: Casual

Salary: £12.71 per hour

Purpose of Role

As a Kitchen Assistant, you will support the operation of Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Café kitchen, assisting with the preparation, cooking, presentation, and service of pizzas, light bites, and other food offerings. You will help maintain high standards of food quality, hygiene, cleanliness, and food safety, ensuring that food is prepared and served consistently in accordance with TTOH procedures, recipes, and specifications.

The role will involve daytime, evening, and weekend work, including shifts supporting theatre performances and events.

  • Preparing food whilst following recipes and portion control
  • Follow food hygiene and allergen procedures
  • Ensuring safe food storage, including temperature controls and cross contamination
  • Cleaning equipment and work areas
  • Maintaining kitchen standards
  • Supporting the wider team
  • Working during busy periods and events
  • Communicating effectively
  • Following instructions and procedures
  • Safe use of kitchen equipment
  • Manual handling
  • COSHH where relevant
  • Reporting hazards and defects

Role Requirements

  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a busy environment and under pressure.
  • Good attention to detail and high standards of cleanliness.
  • Awareness of food hygiene, allergens, and cross-contamination.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Ability to use initiative and work independently when required.
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
  • Flexible and reliable, with availability to work daytime, evening, weekend, and performance-day shifts.

Desirable

  • Previous kitchen, catering, or hospitality experience.
  • Level 2 Food Safety/Hygiene qualification or equivalent.
