Over 10,000 graduates. Around 2,500 students enrolled in any given year. Two degrees each — one British, one Chinese. Twenty-two years without a break.

In 2004, Queen Mary and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications launched the first jointly run programme of its kind between a leading UK and a leading Chinese university. It is still running. Students are taught and assessed in English and graduate with an award from each institution.

Queen Mary describes the programmes as drawing on two distinct educational cultures — the mathematical and scientific rigour found in China, and the emphasis placed on creative problem-solving and transferable skills in the UK. Holding both of those to a single degree standard is the genuinely difficult part.

And a standard is not a statement of intent. It holds because exam boards convene on time, because scripts move between two jurisdictions and arrive intact, and because quality assurance is run by people who understand that a degree is worth exactly what the assessment behind it is worth.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

We are recruiting a JP/JEI Administrator to do that work. Permanent, full time, £40,015–£46,618, based at Mile End. Applications close on 23 August.

I would particularly like to hear from higher education professionals who have supported programmes and want to see what that work looks like at scale, across two education systems and two regulatory environments.

I am the hiring manager for this post and I chair the interview panel. If we speak before you apply, you are speaking to someone who will be in the room — and I would far rather have that conversation than read a guess at what we are looking for. There is a booking link below: pick whatever slot suits you, rather than waiting for me to find one. That offer stands for anyone weighing it up, including people who decide not to apply.
